Digimation Sees Forest for the Trees

Bit-by-bit and byte-by-byte, animated 3D photo-reality is getting closer to the real thing all the time. And New Orleans-based Digimation added to the progress toward that goal, announcing the latest upgrade to its tree software, SpeedTree 2.0.

"If you need to create a lot of highly-realistic looking trees, SpeedTree 2 is very hard to beat," claims Todd Peterson, Digimation software division director. "With the new foresting tool, you can create almost any kind of tree you can imagine."

Specifically being shipped is SpeedTree 2.0 for 3ds max 4.x/5.x (a version will be available for 3ds max 6 when it ships) and SpeedTree VIZ 2.0 for Autodesk VIZ 4. SpeedTree 2 is the latest update to the successful SpeedTree plug-in launched last year. SpeedTree 2.0 includes support for palm trees, trees with even smaller polygon counts, and a completely re-written foresting tool. The software includes a library of approximately 36 different tree species, each in two or three different resolutions and polygon counts to get you started.

Speedtree 2.0 is selling for $295 until Aug. 31, 2003, after which it will jump $395. Upgrades for the software’s previous iteration, SpeedTreeMAX, are $100. Volume discounts, site-licensing, and educational versions are also available. A 15-day time limited demo can be downloaded from www.digimation.com.
