Academy Announces EFX Oscar Short List

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced the seven films being considered for Achievement in Visual Effects for the 75th Academy Awards. The contenders are: Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, Men in Black II, Minority Report, Spider-Man, Star Wars: Episode I – Attack of the Clones and XXX.

Fifteen-minute clip reels from each of the seven films will be screened for the Visual Effects Award Nominating Committee on February 5. The members will then nominate three of these seven films for Oscar consideration. Finalists will be announced along with nominations in 23 other categories on Tuesday, Feb. 11, at 5:30 a.m. PST.

Two Towers, Spider-Man, Minority Report and XXX have also made the list for sound editing. Those clips will be screened on Feb. 4.

This year’s Academy Awards ceremony will be presented on Sunday, March 23 at the Kodak Theatre at Hollywood & Highland and televised live on ABC beginning at 5:30 p.m. PST.
