Whamo, Porchlight, Anchor Bay Principals Form Marvista Ent.
Whamo Ent. principals Joseph Szew, Fernando Szew and Mar Gaya have teamed up with Michael Jacobs, former Sr VP of worldwide sales for PorchLight Ent., and George Port, founder and former CEO of Anchor Bay Ent. to form MarVista Ent. Joseph Szew serves as president and CEO of the new entity.
MarVista is the beneficiary of the Whamo library, which contains 3000 hours of television programming and 40 animated feature films. The company also has a substantial library of sports and music-oriented programming. The new company will continue Whamo’s business strategy, adding the production and acquisition of live-action feature films, television movies and series to its core focus. There are also plans to utilize MarVista’s operations in Barcelona, Spain to cultivate international co-production opportunities.
Joseph Szew parlayed his experience as head of international sales for Channel 9 Argentina into the founding of Whamo. During his tenure as CEO, he became one of the most recognized distributors and entrepreneurs of independent animation and family entertainment companies in the world.
Jacobs, who exec. produced twenty movies and amassed a library of more than 80 feature films and 500 half hours of television programming during his six years at PorchLight, will serve as the president of production and distribution for MarVista.
As managing director, Fernando Szew will continue to expand MarVista’s interests in documentaries, music, sports and lifestyle programming.
George Port served in various executive capacities with the MPAA, ABC, United Artists and Pickwick Int’l before founding and heading Anchor Bay. He will serve as exec. VP.
Prior to joining Whamo as a partner in 2001, Mar Gaya was head of sales and acquisitions for Ex Libris Media. In that capacity she was responsible for licensing and exploiting video and publishing rights in Spain and throughout southern Europe. She will be the managing director for MarVista’s European operations.
MarVista’s corporate headquarters will be located in Los Angeles, California, with European operations set up in Barcelona, Spain. The company will also maintain a production and sales office in Boston.
