The Westdeutscher Rundfunk and Jürgen Egenolf Prods. are producing the first cartoon series based on Ritter Rost, a successful German children’s book and musical property from author/illustrator Jörg Hilbert and composer Felix Janosa. German broadcaster The Erste will air the pilot episode of the 13-part series around Christmas 2003.
Ritter Rost is already a star with German kids. More than 250,000 copies of the book series have been sold and the Ritter Rost musicals are among the country’s most frequently performed works.
Residing in the Iron Castle in Schrottland (Scrap Metal Land), Ritter Rost fancies himself a brave and clever hero, he is really a lovable coward. Together with lady of the castle Bö, her talking hat and a tiny, ten-million-year-old dragon named Koks, the would-be knight tumbles into adventures punctuated by catchy children’s songs.
Following the success of the first Ritter Rost musical as a children’s book with CD (1994), additional titles, as well as a novel and learning software for children, have been published. The pilot and 13 half-hour series are being produced in Cologne.
