Timm’s Batman Return Debuts April 9

Bruce Timm returns to Batman next week in a short film titled Batman: Strange Days that will debut as part of Cartoon Network’s DC Nation block.

Here’s some images from the short, which is done in a stark style features Batman taking on Hugo Strange and a giant of some kind — and is that Silver St. Cloud? (Longtime comics fans will remember the classic run by Steve Englehart and Marshall Rogers on Detective Comics in the 1970s that also influenced Tim Burton’s 1989 Batman feature.)

Timm, of course, debuted on Batman more than 20 years ago with the classic Batman: The Animated Series. He was a driving force in dozens of DC-related Warner Bros. Animation projects from that point on, including Superman: The Animated Series, and several Justice League projects, as well as the DC Universe animated features. After the short-lived Green Lantern: The Animated Series, he left his supervising producer role to work on more personal projects, such as last year’s Superman 75th anniversary animated short, and now this, which comes out in Batman’s 75th anniversary year.

The short will air as part of CN’s DC Nation after a new episode of Teen Titans Go!, which airs at 6:30 ET/PT.

Actually. it seems to be a callback to Detective Comics No. 36 from 1940, the Golden Age debut of Hugo Strange (note the classic costume, B&W art, the perpetual fog and one of Strange’s “monster men”) rather than the 1970s Englehart and Rogers era. While that might be Silver St. Cloud, I’ll bet even money it’s Julie Madison, Batman’s
    original girlfriend.
