Spike is adding another title to its roster of original primetime animated properties that includes Gary the Rat and Stripperella. Daily Variety reports that the cable network for men has acquired This Just In from Fairly OddParents writer Steven Marmel.
The half-hour series reportedly has three best friends–a freelance journalist, a teacher and a househusband–offering their own witty takes on current events. Kevin Kay, a former exec VP of production and development at Nickelodeon who is now exec VP of programming for Spike, will share exec. producer duties with Marmel. The two previously worked together on OddParents.
To ensure that the gags are current, each episode will be written and animated in one week using Flash animation. Kay is quoted saying that goal is to infuse the topicality of a latenight talkshow monologue into a cartoon setting, a feat that would be impossible using traditional animation pipelines.
The show is slted to premiere sometime in the first quarter of 2004. In the meantime, Marmel is working with Fairly OddParents creator Butch Hartman on a script for the theatrical feature version of the Nickelodeon toon series.
