ABC had a big night with its annual airing of the animated special How the Grinch Stole Christmas on Tuesday (Nov. 27). The evergreen special surpassed original episodes of several broadcast comedies in the adult demographic — including NBC’s New Normal and all of Fox’s lineup.

Grinch won 8.4 million viewers and a 2.4 rating among adults 18-49 at 8 p.m. and was followed by a repeat of DreamWorks’ 2007 holiday offering, Shrek the Halls, which attracted 8.4 million viewers and a 2.5 rating. First broadcast on Dec. 18, 1966, the half-hour special was directed by Chuck Jones and written by Christine Kenne and narrated by Boris Karloff.
