Stitch! Show Is Big in Japan

It looks like the wonderful blue alien star of Chris Sanders and Dean DeBlois’ 2002 animated feature Lilo & Stitch is getting his own show in Japan. Variety reports that TV Asahi will air Stitch!, a half-hour toon inspired by the movie at 7 p.m. on Tuesday nights.

A co-pro between Disney and Japan’s famous Madhouse studio, the series’ complete title is Stitch! Itazura Alien no Daiboken (Stitch! The Big Adventures of a Mischievous Alien). Overall, this is a noteworthy scheduling news because the primetime slots on Japanese TV are usually dedicated to homegrown fare. The new toon is set on a fictional island in the Okinawa group, with new characters not seen in the American movie nor the TV spinoffs and direct-to-DVD sequels. The show features a Japanese girl named Yuna in place of Lilo.

The first 25-episode season of the Stitch! show aired on TV Tokyo network between October 2008 and March 2009. It is currently being broadcast on the Disney Channel.
