Spider-Man, Power Rangers Leap to South Africa

Buena Vista International Television (BVITV) has licensed the remastered 1967 Classic Spider-Man animated series and the brand new Power Rangers Ninja Storm live-action series to KTV in South Africa. The deal was struck following this month’s Los Angeles Screenings in California.

Both series will be licensed to the pay TV channel from November this year, marking the first time each will be seen on television outside of Europe.

BVITV and Fox Kids Europe recently undertook the painstaking process of restoring Classic Spider-Man to a high-definition format from the original 35mm film negatives. The soundtrack was also restored. In April, the distributor licensed the 52 newly polished half-hour episodes to Channel 4 for broadcast on terrestrial television in the U.K.

Power Rangers Ninja Storm, which airs on ABC Family and ABC Kids in the U.S., is the new 11th season of the hugely popular franchise. The show follows the adventures of a group of three teens who take on powers from the earth, sky, air and water to transform into superheroes and defend Earth from the evil deeds of a banished Ninja master seeking revenge.

The FKE and BVS portfolio, distributed by BVITV, also includes animated TV series based on other classic Marvel superheroes like The Incredible Hulk, X-Men, The Fantastic Four, Iron Man, Silver Surfer and Sub-Mariner, many of which are being made into Hollywood movies. In addition to Power Rangers, the BVS portfolio includes other major programming franchises such as Digimon, Princess Sissi and Inspector Gadget.

BVITV also entered into an agreement with TV3 to launch Disney’s Breakfast Club in Denmark, Norway and Sweden and the evening slot Disney! in Denmark. These new blocks will offer contemporary and classic Disney programming for the channel’s younger viewers.

Also making its DVD debut is the 1977 Disney Classic The Rescuers, featuring the voices of Bob Newhart and Eva Gabor. Extras include The Ultimate Case set-top detective game; The Rescuers Scrapbook with never-before-seen and rare animation art, music and behind-the-scenes secrets; “Someone’s Waiting for You” sing-along; the 1952 Academy Award-winning short Water Birds, a Disney true-life adventure; and the Silly Symphony animated shorts Three Blind Musketeers and Under the Hat Villains. The Buena Vista Home Ent. release lists for $29.99 DVD.
