Sony Goes to The Boondocks

July 11, 2003 by Ryan Ball divider image

Variety reports that Sony is developing TV and feature film projects based on The Boondocks comic strip created by Aaron McGruder and partner Reggie Hudlin.

McGruder and Hudlin are writing a TV pilot and an animated feature treatment that expands the world of The Boondocks, which uses edgy humor to tackle cultural and political issues as seen through the eyes of two inner-city kids relocated to the suburbs and placed in the custody of their grandfather.

Sony hopes to have TV deals sewn up in time for a 2004-05 launch. Given Sony Pictures Animation’s sole interest in computer animation, the show and feature will be realized in CG.

Hudlin wrote and exec produced the animated feature Bebe’s Kids, and is reportedly working with McGruder on a graphic novel titled Birth of a Nation, set for release by Crown in 2004.
