Transylvania, Universal Network Television’s Van Helsing-inspired period TV series is no longer slated for air on NBC, according to Daily Variety. Despite the feature film’s healthy $219 million worldwide box office performance, the spin-off project has reportedly been shelved over cost concerns.
Van Helsing writer/director Stephen Sommers was attached as exec producer of Transylvania, further extending his devotion to reviving Universal’s classic movie monster catalog. After writing several features, including 1998’s CG-laden Deep Rising, he made his mark in Hollywood by writing and directing the 1999 remake of The Mummy and its sequel, The Mummy Returns.
The series is still classified as "under development," but may ultimately go to another network since other broadcasters have expressed an interest in visiting the legendary home of Count Dracula.
