The hit Warner Bros. Animation series ¡Mucha Lucha! is branching out from its home on Kids’ WB! and into other platforms, including a feature film, made-for-video releases, comic books, console games, consumer products and online experiences. Warner Bros. Animation, Kids’ WB!, Warner Bros. Pictures, Warner Home Video, DC Comics, Warner Bros. Consumer Products and Warner Bros. Online are all teaming to further capitalize on the popularity of the property. Also in the mix are AOL Time Warner sister companies including AOL, Warner Music Group and Cartoon Network.
Produced by Warner Bros. Animation, the Flash-animated ¡Mucha Lucha! is a comedy-adventure series about honor, family, tradition and donuts, which draws its inspiration from Latin culture and explores the Mexican phenomenon of masked wrestling known as Lucha Libre. The half-hour show returns to Kids’ WB! in the fall with a 26-episode second season.
Simulcast in Spanish via Second Audio Programming (SAP), ¡Mucha Lucha! debuted in the 2002-2003 television season and finished the season among the top 10 broadcast and cable programs for Saturday mornings among Kids 6-11, Boys 6-11, tweens 9-14 and male tweens 9-14.
The stars of ¡Mucha Lucha!, Rikochet, Buena Girl and The Flea, will appear in a mini-DVD this fall in a consumer/retail promotion from Warner Bros. Consumer Products and Warner Home Video. A special episodic compilation titled Heart of Lucha will also be released on video, as will an original feature-length, made-for-video adventure from Warner Home Video. A big screen feature film from Warner Bros. Pictures will follow.
Gamers can get into the ring with Code of Masked Wrestling, set to debut on GameBoy Advance this winter and PlayStation 2 in 2004. More interactive fun can be found online at www.muchalucha.com or www.kidswb.com. The site will feature Lucha Mania, a multiple-player wrestling game that will allow fans to enter an online arena and pit their wrestlers against one another.
On the publishing front, DC Comics will offer a line of limited edition ¡Mucha Lucha! comic books and Harper Collins Publishing will enter the arena in July with the first in a series of chapter books chronicling the over-the-top comedy.
