In September, we mentioned that Canadian computer animation house Mainframe was working on giving Popeye a CG makeover for the Fox network. Now Daily Variety brings word that Oscar-winning actress Kathy Bates (Misery, About Schmidt) has come aboard the voice cast.
In Popeye’s Voyage: The Quest for Pappy, Bates will play a sea hag/siren opposite Billy West (Ren & Stimpy) as the spinach-guzzling sailor man. The 30-minute special, written by Paul Reiser and Jim Hardison, will air in primetime at the end of the year. Lions Gate Family Home Entertainment will release an hour-long expanded version on home video Nov. 9.
Former Devo frontman Mark Mothersbaugh, who has been making quite a living scoring movies and animated TV projects such as Rugrats, is putting a new spin on the “Popeye the Sailor Man” theme song.
Popeye celebrates his 75th anniversary this year, and the TV special is just part of a larger franchise relaunch being spearheaded by King Features Syndicate. An animated theatrical feature may also be on the way.
