FX has renewed the half-hour animated spy spoof comedy series Archer for a third season, The Hollywood Reporter writes.

The cable network’s order calls for 16 episodes of the Adam Reed-created series, up from 13 episodes in season two. The announcement was made at the FX upfront presentation to advertisers in New York.

The series will return in September and air three episodes in September after new episodes of the live-action comedy series It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. The remaining 13 episodes will air in early 2012.

Network executives also said during the up-fronts that it is looking for another comedy to pair with Archer once Sunny ends its run. One option is another animated series, Townies, from the creators of Sunny.
