Florida Gets Creative with Cel Animation
The Florida Media Arts Center (FMAC) is promoting central Florida artists through Creative Works, a series of video shorts featuring some of central Florida’s most talented artists. The first episode features a cel animation “how to” demonstration by Orlando animator/animation producer Mark Simon.
Simon, who runs A&S Animation Inc., notes, “I always have clients asking me how we do our animation. Nothing works as well as a video to quickly show them our process.” This short would be used on his company’s demo DVD and could possibly be used in one of his upcoming text books.
Once the raw footage was shot, both Simon and director Suchy started independent edits. Simon added some special animation effects, original voice-overs explaining more technical details and time-lapse video of artists working.
Completed in April, the documentary has already won a 2003 national Telly Award in the How To category. The short is now going into the festival circuit.
The brain child of FMAC president Bill Suchy, Creative Works is funded through grants from United Arts of Central Florida and the Winter Park investment firm Allen Douglas Securities.
The first 6 episodes of Creative Works are now on the air. The ten-part series will be aired repeatedly on Orlando’s WMFE PBS Channel 24 as well as on Orange TV and OGTV (Ocoee Government Television). With the help of producer Mike Seif, it is being developing into a monthly half-hour series for 2004.
