The CBBC has commissioned 26 new Postman Pat episodes and four half-hour specials from Entertainment Rights. The new installments will introduce the first new character in nearly a decade.
The series will be produced by stop motion animation studio Cosgrove Hall with creative involvement from John Cunliffe, writer of the original Postman Pat series and books. Theresa Plummer-Andrews will serve as exec. producer for the BBC.
Created in 1981, Postman Pat remains a CBBC favorite and has been seen in more that 60 countries. With the new episodes and videos, Entertainment Rights hopes to make the property a global phenomenon like Thomas & Friends.
In addition to returning characters like Jess the Cat, the series will feature an Indian family that comes to manage the restored train station in Greendale.
Postman Pat will go into production in March 2003 with the first direct-to-video special released on the Right Entertainment label in autumn 2003. Delivery of the series will be completed by end 2004.
