Disney Sets ‘Star Wars Rebels’ Premieres

The animated one-hour movie Star Wars Rebels: Spark of Rebellion, which will lead into the upcoming animated series, will premiere online Sept. 29 to verified users on WATCHDisneyXD.com and the WATCH Disney XD app. The movie’s television debut will follow Oct. 3 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on Disney Channel, with the series set to begin Oct. 13 at 9 p.m. ET/PT.

The television movie screened last month at Comic-Con International in San Diego to a select group of fans and press, garnering positive reviews for its classic Star Wars look and feel.

Set between Star Wars: Episode III — Revenge of the Sith and Star Wars: Episode IV — A New Hope, the story explores the beginnings of the rebellion against the Empire through the eyes of the motley but clever crew of the starship Ghost: cowboy Jedi Kanan, ace pilot Hera, street-smart teenager Ezra, the “muscle” Zeb, warrior firebrand Sabine, and cantankerous old astromech droid Chopper.

Star Wars Rebels is created by Dave Filoni (Star Wars: The Clone Wars), Simon Kinberg (X-Men: Days of Future Past, Sherlock Holmes) and Carrie Beck. The Lucasfilm Animation production is executive produced by Filoni and Kinberg as well as Greg Weisman (Gargoyles).

The voice cast includes Freddie Prinze Jr. as Kanan, Vanessa Marshall as Hera, Steve Blum as Zeb, Tiya Sircar as Sabine, Taylor Gray as Ezra, David Oyelowo as Agent Kallus and Jason Isaacs as the Inquisitor.

Nothing real impressive here, CG films have become the standard, generic format, especially from Disney over the last decade. At first they were very new and unique, especially in the late 90′s and early 2000′s. The fad has long worn off since every single production from every American animation studio became CG. Traditional 2D hand drawn animation could really use a come-back, and especially with all the computer technology they have available to enhance traditional animation.
