The Walt Disney Co. is reportedly working on making Disney Channel available in China. According to Reuters, the company has applied for a limited license that would make the cable outlet available in foreigners’ compounds and upscale hotels in certain areas.
Time Warner, News Corp and Viacom have already made inroads in China’s television market, where Disney will primarily compete with Viacom should the conglom be granted a limited license for a Chinese-language version of its kids’ channel, Nickelodeon. A Mandarin version of its MTV is already available.
The Disney Channel in China would also be available in Mandarin, China’s official language. Decisions on that license and the Nickelodeon application may be made as soon as year’s end.
