Channelzero Gets Ernest, Goes Ghetto at MIPCOM

Channelzero Ent. and creative force Dave Warren have been busy hatching new properties for this year’s MIPCOM in Cannes, France. In addition to its sexy 2D series SoSophie, the company is bringing two 3D properties to the table. Ghetto Fabulous and Ernest Makes History are being previewed for buyers and distributors this week.

Described by Warren as Legally Blonde meets The Fast and the Furious with a Quentin Tarantino-style dark comedy flair, Ghetto Fabulous tells the story of a Beverly Hills brat who is forced to return to her New York ghetto roots and gets caught up in the underground street racing scene. The show is geared to the 18-35 set.

For kids, channelzero offers the educational comedy Ernest Makes History, featuring an animated version of the Ernest P. Worrell character made famous by late actor Jim Varney. In the new series, Ernest has accidentally discovered a time portal and travels back in history with sidekick Billy the Big Mouth Bass.

The Ernest character first appeared in commercials for Brahm’s Ice Cream in the early to mid ‘80s. Varney then took the loveable redneck to the big screen with titles like Ernest Goes to Camp, Ernest Goes to Jail, Ernest Saves Christmas and Ernest Scared Stupid. The character also had his own live-action Saturday morning TV series before Varney went on to portray Jed Clampett in the big-screen adaptation of TV’s The Beverly Hillbillies.
