Cable and video-on-demand offering Anime Network is kicking off the new year with the addition of four programs to its VOD lineup. Throughout the month of January, the network will be premiering Magikano, Welcome to NHK, Moonlight Mile and the award-winning feature film 5 Centimeters Per Second. For those without VOD, all four productions will also be released soon on DVD.
Starting Jan. 3, Magikano is a magical comedy about a middle school student who is seemingly ordinary, with the exception of his three witch sisters and his own soon-to-be-awakened mystical powers. The series is produced by Studio Gonzo and directed by Seiji Kishi (Ragnarok The Animation).
Jan, 17 sees the premiere of 5 Centimeters Per Second, the latest feature from acclaimed director Makoto Shinkai. The dramatic three-part tale focuses on two best friends, their hidden feelings and their attempts to reunite after being separated by fate. The production won Best Animated Feature Film at lat month’s inaugural Asia Pacific Screen Awards.
Also debuting on Jan. 17 is Welcome to the NHK. Produced by Studio Gonzo and directed by Yusuke Yamamoto (Sgt. Frog), this dark comedy employs social satire and crazy conspiracy theories as it shines a light on the inherent challenges faced by geeks and nerds.
Moonlight Mile will be available to viewers on Jan 31. The sci-fi adventure show from Studio Hibari chronicles the exploits of two mountain climbers who become space explorers and discover a new source of energy that may solve one of planet Earth’s greatest problems.
