American Greetings’ intellectual property and outbound licensing division has signed a co-production deal with India-based toon studio DQ Ent. to create a new animated television series for the Maryoku Yummy property. The companies will collaborate on 52 11- minute episodes to be scripted and directed by Jymn Magon, whose credits include Duck Tales, Rescue Rangers and Winnie The Pooh.
Created by American Greetings Properties studio chief Jeffrey Conrad, the preschool series will center on Maryoku, an adorable “Yummy” who lives in a quirky, fantastical world where all children’s wishes go to be granted. The word Maryoku means ‘magical’ in Japanese and the characters grew out of doodles Conrad created over the years. ‘I’ve always been fascinated by the landscape prints from the Edo Period because they create a visual journey that inspires both philosophical and poetic reflection,’ he says.
DQ will hold broadcast and home video distribution rights for Maryoku Yummy in France and India, and will also have all merchandising rights for India. American Greetings Properties will retain rights for the rest of the world and is in discussions with several broadcasters to debut the series in the fall of 2008. The company is also seeking to build partnerships in the publishing, toy, apparel, accessories and home entertainment categories.
