To celebrate the arrival of my newly found friend, ZBrush 3.5, I picked up the new book: ZBrush Digital Sculpting Human Anatomy by the ZBrush Guy, Scott Spencer. Spencer, who also wrote ZBrush Character Creation: Advanced Digital Sculpting in 2008, has already saved me on numerous occasions. Predominantly, the saving events were technical in nature. Through clear, concise, and pertinent information in both the text and the videos on the accompanying DVD, I was able to get through a bunch of troublesome spots.
The knowledgeable author takes you through modeling a superhero, starting with the foundation of human anatomy, providing information from both an artistic and scientific standpoint. He breaks it all down for you, blending not only how to approach techniques in a certain way, but also why’and on top of that, using the correct tools for the correct job.
Spencer’s approach is straightforward: He may use big Latin words, but it’s far from clinical and he makes going through the videos a pleasant experience. He should also be praised for sharing the spotlight with the other artists from which he has learned his craft.
You can tell how much I’ve enjoyed this primer just by looking at the condition of my book: It’s already so bent and earmarked that it resembles one of those high school textbooks that has been passed down through five siblings, rather than the pristine, shiny piece of literature that arrived via Amazon only a week ago!
