Oregon3D, Pixar Animator Offer Free Seminar at GDC

Oregon3D Inc., the Center for Visualization Technologies, will present a free seminar titled “Great Animation and Storytelling” at the Game Developers Conference in San Jose, Calif. on Saturday, March 8 from 10:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The session will be taught by Pixar animator Andrew Gordon and award-winning filmmaker and former Will Vinton Studios director Mike Wellins.

Using specific examples from games, films and television production, Gordon and Wellins will discuss animation fundamentals and principles, animation directing, the basics of performance staging, blocking, storytelling, editing for emotion and classic character animation.

Lead animator on the character Mike in Monsters, Inc., Gordon has been animating characters professionally for ten years. His latest project at Pixar Animation Studios is the upcoming CG feature Finding Nemo. He is also gearing up to work on The Incredibles. Prior to Pixar, Andrew worked in classic animation at Warner Bros.

Wellins is a prolific independent filmmaker and commercial animation director currently working at Happy Hour Ent. in Portland, Oregon. During his 5-year tenure as a staff director at Will Vinton Studios, Wellins directed dozens of commercials for clients ranging from Kikkoman to Playstation and helmed television pilots, a video for the Powerpuff Girls and an episode of Fox’s The PJs. He has made more than 60 films including two low budget features.
