Company to Bring Warhammer 40,000 Characters to Life with Facial Animation for New
Animated Movie

LOS ANGELES, CA - Jan. 26, 2010 - Image Metrics, the leading provider of facial animation technology and services for the entertainment industry, is providing facial animation for the characters in the upcoming animated science fiction thriller film, Ultramarines. Produced by UK-based Codex Pictures, in association with Good Story Productions and Canadian co-producer Pop6 Studios, Ultramarines is based on Games Workshop's iconic property Warhammer 40,000, the epic tabletop war game set in a bleak universe in the 41st millennium. The film's release date has yet to be revealed. Ultramarines is Image Metrics' first project with Codex Pictures.

"Given the legacy of the Warhammer 40,000 game, Image Metrics is especially excited to work with Codex Pictures on Ultramarines to bring the unique science-fiction universe to the medium of film," said Brian Waddle, executive vice president of Image Metrics. "Creating an alternate world that fully immerses the audience becomes even more challenging when working with a legacy property, especially when in a new medium. Animating lifelike characters that establish believability is a critical part of forging this connection with viewers. The Image Metrics technology is a perfect match to create the facial detail and high fidelity animation required to bring movies like Ultramarines to life."

Charged with creating lifelike superhuman Space Marine characters, Image Metrics is using performance capture data and character rigs provided by Pop6 Studios to deliver approximately 65 minutes of animation for the Ultramarines movie.

"Ultramarines demands high quality facial animation in order to believably portray the Warhammer 40,000 characters. Image Metrics is the ideal technology partner for the project, giving us total freedom to animate the character in 3D space and lighting without restrictions or compromises on camera angles," said Vanessa Chapman, Codex managing director.

MIFFY HITS THE BIG SCREEN

Hilversum, 21 January 2010 - MIFFY - THE MOVIE, the latest project of Dutch Telescreen B.V., a leading production, distribution and Brand Management company and part of the German m4e AG, will be introduced at the European Film Market in Berlin. The 70-minute stop-motion cinema experience for 3-6 year olds (and the whole family) is currently in pre-production and is expected for delivery in November 2011. The movie will combine all of the hallmarks that have already been proven to work on TV for the latest 3D series "Miffy" (78 x 5') and for successful specials such as "Family Celebrations" (4 x 24') and "Explore the World with Miffy" (4 x 11').

MIFFY is a world famous character - celebrating her 55th birthday this year - created by Dutch author and illustrator Dick Bruna, whose copyrights are protected by the Dutch Mercis bv. Of the 117 original book titles of the little rabbit, more than 85 mio were sold in over 40 different languages and a broad range of merchandising products is available, ranging from baby, apparel to toys and gifts. MIFFY made her TV debut in 1992, appearing in 82 episodes of each 5 minutes in 2D animation, later a 3D animated series was produced. The series is currently broadcasted in over 40 countries and available on DVD as well. On top of that, MIFFY serves as a "celebrity character spokesperson" for UNICEF.

Telescreen Film Productions, a division of Telescreen B.V., is co-producing the movie with Dutch public broadcaster KRO at a budget of € 3.2 mio., and with the development support of the MEDIA programme of the European Union and the Dutch Film Fund.
The executive studio will be A.Film Denmark, renown for its work on film productions such as "FernGully: The Last Rainforest" (1992), "Quest for Camelot" (1998) and "Asterix and the Vikings" (2005).

The movie, built around a game that children know and love - a treasure hunt - celebrates the joy of curiosity, the fun of working together and the adventure of friendship. It will feature all of the characteristics that made MIFFY a beloved international phenomenon: the proven successful 3D animation style, the primary colours, songs and music that are rhyming and sing-able for a young child, the same cast of familiar Dick Bruna characters, a simple story line with as much recognisable situations and objects as possible, and a patient tone that emphasizes an almost idealized childhood - maybe the one we all wished for.

For the first time, voices will be added - individual voices that are characteristic of MIFFY's world: friendly, safe, funny, curious and surprising. A narrator will be there to guide the story when needed and to tie everything together in a friendly way. By adding new entertainment elements to create interactivity, every viewer will be invited to be a part of the story on screen.

The movie is structured as five story segments that string together to create the bigger overall story. In short: In the zoo MIFFY's parents set out a treasure hunt and give MIFFY and her friends five clues, one at a time. These clues in the form of a song are about the colour, shape or sound of an animal. Putting all solutions together, MIFFY and her friends can solve the treasure hunt...

NEW YORK, NEW YORK - October 15, 2009 - For a fifth time, FlickerLab has teamed with Academy Award-winning Director Michael Moore, and created a minute-long animated segment, Chicken Little, for his latest feature Capitalism: A Love Story. Opening in New York and Los Angeles Sept. 23 and in theaters nationwide October 2nd, the film explores the root causes of the global economic meltdown and takes a sardonic look at the corporate and political shenanigans that plunged the world into the current financial crisis.

FlickerLab, the New York-based design and animation studio, worked with Moore in the past to create a cartoon for Bowling for Columbine and graphics and design for both Fahrenheit 9/11 and Sicko, three of the top five highest-grossing documentaries of all time. In addition, the company collaborated with Moore on a music video for the Armenian-American rock band System of a Down.

For Capitalism: A Love Story (from Paramount Vantage), FlickerLab designed, animated and created effects for a one-minute piece using rotoscoped footage of George Bush's state of the union speech in which he scared the nation into giving the banking industry $700 million dollars, and turned the footage  into Chicken Little, a cartoon horror show.  Bush is at the podium, on a red carpet, addressing the nation as thunder, lightening, flames, and great gusts of wind, envelop and destroy the White House, ending the world as we have known it. Chandeliers fall, columns crash to the ground, walls crumble and citizens run shrieking through the hall behind the President. In addition to this cartoon, the animation studio created other graphics and motion design pieces for the film.

Of their most recent collaboration with Moore, FlickerLab Director/Creative Director Harold Moss stated, "It is always a real thrill to be working with Michael, particularly on a film that goes right to the roots of the economic crisis we have all been trying to swim through."

DUCK Makes Ending Credits Happy For Sony Pictures Animation

The animated feature film Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs is based on the classic children's book about the town of ChewandSwallow, where mysterious storms begin raining down hot dogs, pancakes, bananas, spaghetti, burgers, and more, to everyone's delight. But when the storms get out of control, the town needs a hero. And they don't mean a sandwich.

A movie this visually arresting and surprising demands compelling and technically sophisticated end main credits. DUCK took up the challenge.

"Joining a project of this caliber was an opportunity to showcase not just the technical skill, but also the technical creativity of our designers and animators," said DUCK Executive Producer Mark Medernach.

Working from story ideas by the movie's two directors Christopher Miller and Phil Lord, DUCK created animatics for timing and motion for the sequence. Directors Soyeon Kim & Todd Hemker of YELLOWSHED, represented by DUCK, collaborated with designer Justin K. Thompson from Sony to design the characters and backgrounds in Photoshop. Then, DUCK used After Effects to create digital puppets for the characters, adding joints to the bodies for movability. In a process similar to traditional stop-motion animation, designers posed each frame exactly the way they wanted it animated. DUCK animators worked from the puppets and the frames to animate the sequence in seven weeks.

The 3D animated feature film will be released on a minimum of 1500 - 3D and 2D screens - in North America, 1st Quarter 2012

Have You Ever Been (To Electric Lemon Land?)

03.jpghttp://www.freestylecollective.com/#/project/?category=view%20featured&id=94&pageStartNum=0

NEW YORK - July 15th, 2009: Freestyle Collective recently completed an in-house animation project entitled "Lemon Drop Kiss".

The one and a half minute, adventure short was the collaborative brainchild of Art Director Brian Drucker and animators, Christina Sidoti, Damien Cho, and Entae Kim - under the Creative Direction of Freestyle Collective co-founder, Victor Newman.

The sheer amount of detail that went into creating the world of "Lemon Drop Kiss" is staggering. Drucker, who worked previously at Digital Domain and Sony, and served as the 3D Technical Director on Dreamwork's Shrek said, "It was an amazing opportunity to create a magical adventure - to follow a character through an imagined world, full of hidden details. I wanted the viewer to have to watch the animation multiple times in order to fully grasp everything that was going on."

The brief, animated piece documents the journey of a tiny traveler who flies, drives, and swims his way through a surreal world of unparallel complexity. Beginning in a serene, pastel garden, where flowers sway gently in the breeze and pollen floats idly by, a pod shoots up from inside one of the flowers, sprouts wings and begins fluttering towards a vast robotic metropolis, pulsating with activity. Landing gear descends, as the tiny capsule touches down and begins racing around the chaotic cityscape, zipping down a giant rocking-robot mountain, nearly careening out of control.
