Bonfire Grows with Key Staff Additions

Associate Creative Director Barry Munsterteiger, Producer Kenji Hayashi and
Associate Art Director Adam Oestergaard Handle Growing Volume of Design
Work

San Francisco, CA (January 26, 2010)-Bonfire, the motion design and
integrated media company, and sister facility of Bay Area mainstay Phoenix
Editorial, announced it has grown its team. Associate Creative Director
Barry Munsterteiger, Producer/Technical Advisor Kenji Hayashi, and
Associate Art Director Adam Oestergaard have been recruited to handle
Bonfire's growing volume of design work.

Bonfire is starting the new year with a number of high profile design
assignments. The company has also seen an increase in clients coming to
Bonfire to help solve their design challenges - whether it's creating
futuristic product UI design, immersive digital entertainment experiences,
or creative content for the big screen.

Said Julia Sonder-Patchin, executive producer for Bonfire and Phoenix
Editorial, "It was clear as 2009 was drawing to a close that we needed to
expand, so we've added to Bonfire's already heavy-duty brain trust. Barry's
many years with Apple enable him to communicate with our technology clients
on a user level. He's also an amazing designer, most notably in the world
of user interface design. We're also fortunate to add Kenji, an extremely
detail-oriented producer and an expert at compression technology, so he'll
be a huge asset as we upgrade our production pipeline. Rounding out the
trio is Adam, who truly has the makings of a rock-star animator."

Barry Munsterteiger is a formally trained industrial designer whose
specialty is solving complex business problems through design. With
experience that spans digital, broadcast, user experience and user
interface design, Munsterteiger brings strategic thinking as well as
technical and creative innovation to Bonfire, where he'll be working
closely with Creative Director Matt Silverman and Associate Creative
Director Phil Spitler on Bonfire's highest profile technology clients.

"When we decided we needed another creative leader on our team, Barry was
the first person I thought of. We've worked together on numerous projects
over the years for Apple, and our careers have followed similar core paths
while diverging in different directions," said Bonfire Creative Director
Matt Silverman. "His unique expertise from his time at Apple will help
Bonfire transition into the new bleeding-edge motion-intensive interactive
space."

Munsterteiger comes to Bonfire after spending nearly eight years with
Apple, most recently as a creative director, where he played a key role in
R&D that led to the development of iTunes LP and iTunes Extras. He also
spent five years as technical director and was the very first person hired
to join Apple's in-house motion graphics department. Munsterteiger's career
has included management and design posts at several Bay Area design and
technology companies. He began his career as an industrial designer,
working at Index Design & Associates, and Procter & Gamble.

Producer and Technical Advisor Kenji Hayashi will be working across both
Bonfire and Phoenix Editorial and will be tasked with what he
affectionately dubs, "extreme cat-herding." Hayashi's key responsibilities
will be bringing together creative teams from both facilities on jobs,
managing the budget schedule and overseeing the post-production workflow,
in particular video compression and how it relates to acquisition, post and
delivery. Before joining Bonfire/Phoenix, Hayashi was an executive producer
at Compression Group, and prior to that, spent five years at Rough House
Editorial, where he was executive technical director and producer.

Denmark native Adam Oestergaard is a talented animator and 3D artist who
honed his skills during a 10-month-long stint at Bonfire while attending
the Academy of Art, San Francisco to earn his MFA in Visual Effects.
Previous to heading out to California (and thus, fulfilling a childhood
dream), Oestergaard studied at Northern England's Cumbria Institute of the
Arts, where he earned a degree in 3D and Visual Effects.

Naoko Takeuchi.

«We are very happy» commented Kanji Kazahaya, Directeur General, Toei Animation Europe, «to

New Wave of Czech Animation-DVD

PRAGUE / CZECH REPUBLIC, 25 January 2010 - „New Wave of Czech Animation" - the most recent project

of the International Festival of Animated Films ANIFEST operating under the umbrella of the Institute of Czech Animation launches the first DVD of a series introducing the selection of young Czech artists - animators. Apart from already known names, e.g.Galina Miklínová or Michal Žabka, the DVD also features the representatives

of a newly emerging generation:  Martin Duda, Zdeněk Durdil, Edita Krausová, Aneta Kýrová, Jaromír Plachý, Lucie Sunková and Václav Švankmajer. The non-commercial disc of 90 min with English subtitles is meant

to become the long missing tool internationally promoting the best young Czech animators. The dramaturgist

and the author of the introductory text is the nestor of Czech animation Jiří Kubíček - the Professor of the Film and TV School of Academy of Performing Arts in Prague, Animated Film Department.

After movie theatres had abolished the screening of shorts before a feature-length films (which used to be guarranteed by law in the CR before 1989), and given the international tendency towards producing commercial feature-length formats, the original short films have become a sort of „endangered species". Despite the fact that for animated production the category of short films  is essential and it boasts by a long tradition and famous names, short animated films can only be seen at festivals. This is why the Czech Animation Institute / AniFest  consider  it their priority to continue the long tradition of classice masters of Czech animation, e.g. J.Trnka, K. Zeman, J. Švankmajer, B.Pojar, or J. Barta, P.Koutský, M. Pavlátová and many others and through its new project „New Wave of Czech Animation" introduce young Czech animators to the world professional audience as well as to the large public. The  DVDs will be presented primarily at leading international festivals, in Czech Cultural Centres and at various film events worldwide.

In his introduction, Professor Kubíček says: „Without anybody planning or forecasting it, Czech animation saw the birth of something new, congenial, viable and meaningful. Let's call it the "New Wave" as this technical term has a grounded tradition and a solid foundation in the Czech film industry. It is a symbol".

There is a city with a large labyrinth. Day and Night and the Sun and the Moon keep alternating above the city in a seemingly never-ending cycle. Suddenly the gear sticks and then stops and the city is covered in endless darkness. The hero enters the labyrinth and wanders along its dark corridors. He is followed by guards who, at first sight, look like motionless statues of Ancient women. But they come back to life behind the hero's back who is on his way into the heart of the labyrinth to pass three tests.

Vancouver, BC. Canada. January 21, 2010 - In a week of awards buzz for the film, it was announced today that District 9 has been nominated for the Special Visual Effects award at this year's Orange British Academy Film Awards.

Image Engine continue to accumulate reasons to celebrate this week, as their work for District 9 makes it to the shortlist of five films to be up for the prestigious BAFTA award.

This news follows the announcement earlier this week that Image Engine are also nominated in three categories at the industry VES Awards this year, and their inclusion on the shortlist for the coveted Oscar® nomination, to be announced in February.

Image Engine CEO, Greg Holmes spoke on behalf of the company today:

"It was a pleasure to work with Neill Blomkamp in bringing his aliens to life and we are all very proud of the results that we achieved together. I am delighted with today's news and thrilled that District 9 continues to impress audiences around the world."

District 9 and Image Engine will be vying with Avatar, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, Star Trek and The Hurt Locker for the award for ' Special Visual Effects' at the ceremony on Sunday 21st February 2010.

Peter Muyzers, COO said today:

"We are very grateful to Neill Blomkamp for the opportunity to work on this film.  This nomination is a testament to everybody at Image Engine who has raised the bar on this project and helped to put the company and the Vancouver visual effects industry on the world map."

District 9 Director, Neill Blomkamp, made the call to bring the majority of the visual effects work to Image Engine where he could rely on the focus and passion that the dedicated team would bring.

"Image Engine's work (on District 9) ... is by far the best visual effects work that has ever been produced in Vancouver". Says Blomkamp. "...I think Image Engine has done absolutely top tier brilliant work that far exceeded my expectations!"

The greatest visual effects challenge was to create believable creature animation, which would seamlessly blend with District 9's critically acclaimed documentary style of filming.

Shawn Walsh, Visual Effects Executive Producer explains how Image Engine and Blomkamp worked together to create the director's unique vision.

"The key aspect was how Neill simply wanted the audience to 'accept' these bizarre intrusions into human life in Johannesburg. In a way, he wanted the visual effects to be invisible to the audience. Image Engine met this daunting challenge to put alien creatures in a real world setting to tell an incredible story in a credible way."

About Image Engine:

Image Engine provides world-class visual effects for feature films.

With over 15 years in the industry, several award wins and an impressive list of feature film credits including the recent District 9, Law Abiding Citizen, 2012, Watchmen, Orphan & currently The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, they are leading the growing feature film visual effects industry in Canada.

Image Engine is a privately owned and run company, based in Vancouver, BC.

MIFFY HITS THE BIG SCREEN

Hilversum, 21 January 2010 - MIFFY - THE MOVIE, the latest project of Dutch Telescreen B.V., a leading production, distribution and Brand Management company and part of the German m4e AG, will be introduced at the European Film Market in Berlin. The 70-minute stop-motion cinema experience for 3-6 year olds (and the whole family) is currently in pre-production and is expected for delivery in November 2011. The movie will combine all of the hallmarks that have already been proven to work on TV for the latest 3D series "Miffy" (78 x 5') and for successful specials such as "Family Celebrations" (4 x 24') and "Explore the World with Miffy" (4 x 11').

MIFFY is a world famous character - celebrating her 55th birthday this year - created by Dutch author and illustrator Dick Bruna, whose copyrights are protected by the Dutch Mercis bv. Of the 117 original book titles of the little rabbit, more than 85 mio were sold in over 40 different languages and a broad range of merchandising products is available, ranging from baby, apparel to toys and gifts. MIFFY made her TV debut in 1992, appearing in 82 episodes of each 5 minutes in 2D animation, later a 3D animated series was produced. The series is currently broadcasted in over 40 countries and available on DVD as well. On top of that, MIFFY serves as a "celebrity character spokesperson" for UNICEF.

Telescreen Film Productions, a division of Telescreen B.V., is co-producing the movie with Dutch public broadcaster KRO at a budget of € 3.2 mio., and with the development support of the MEDIA programme of the European Union and the Dutch Film Fund.
The executive studio will be A.Film Denmark, renown for its work on film productions such as "FernGully: The Last Rainforest" (1992), "Quest for Camelot" (1998) and "Asterix and the Vikings" (2005).

The movie, built around a game that children know and love - a treasure hunt - celebrates the joy of curiosity, the fun of working together and the adventure of friendship. It will feature all of the characteristics that made MIFFY a beloved international phenomenon: the proven successful 3D animation style, the primary colours, songs and music that are rhyming and sing-able for a young child, the same cast of familiar Dick Bruna characters, a simple story line with as much recognisable situations and objects as possible, and a patient tone that emphasizes an almost idealized childhood - maybe the one we all wished for.

For the first time, voices will be added - individual voices that are characteristic of MIFFY's world: friendly, safe, funny, curious and surprising. A narrator will be there to guide the story when needed and to tie everything together in a friendly way. By adding new entertainment elements to create interactivity, every viewer will be invited to be a part of the story on screen.

The movie is structured as five story segments that string together to create the bigger overall story. In short: In the zoo MIFFY's parents set out a treasure hunt and give MIFFY and her friends five clues, one at a time. These clues in the form of a song are about the colour, shape or sound of an animal. Putting all solutions together, MIFFY and her friends can solve the treasure hunt...

NATIONAL FILM BOARD OF CANADA OFFERS HD & 3D FILMS ONLINE

Montreal, January 21, 2010 - A year ago the National Film Board of Canada gave Canadians unprecedented access to 70 years of collective experience with the launch of its online screening room, <NFB.ca>. Three months ago the screening room went mobile with the introduction of the wildly popular iPhone app.

Today the NFB is introducing high-definition (HD) films online and adding a bonus feature of recent experiments in online 3D. These are the latest example of how the NFB is striving to use digital technologies to connect Canadians with their past, reflect and share their present, and explore their future.

"Canadians are the greatest consumers of video online as well as the greatest users of social networking site Facebook. Online is the new public space and as a public institution the NFB has a responsibility to occupy that space for Canadians and provide Canadians with a reflection of our realities. And it has to be a dynamic and interactive experience that is always engaging: for all Canadians and particularly younger Canadians and Canadians from diverse communities. What we've done to date is only a start: we will be making a tradition of releasing major new innovations at the start of each year," said Tom Perlmutter, Government Film Commissioner and NFB Chairperson.

After one year, the online Screening Room has registered over 3.7 million film views.

High definition

Starting today, 26 films are available in high definition at the Screening Room.

HD titles include Chris Landreth's Oscar-winning animated short Ryan, coproduced with Copper Heart Entertainment, as well as Cordell Barker's beloved musical comedy short The Cat Came Back. HD documentaries include Murray Siple's Carts of Darkness, a look at the extreme sport of shopping-cart racing, already one of the NFB's top-viewed titles in standard definition, and Brett Gaylor's award-winning Rip: A Remix Manifesto, co-produced with EyeSteelFilm.

French-language HD titles include Claude Jutra's Mon oncle Antoine, chosen by critics as the greatest Canadian film of all time, Michel Brault and Pierre Perrault's classic Pour la suite du monde, along with great animations like Chris Lavis and Maciek Szczerbowski's Madame Tutli Putli and Sheldon Cohen's hockey classic Le Chandail, adapted from the story by Roch Carrier.

To visit the NFB's high definition video portal, go to <NFB.ca/HD>.

3D films

The NFB is sharing the fruit of its 3D experiments online with the acclaimed NFB animated shorts Drux Flux by Theodore Ushev and the Genie Award-winning Falling in Love Again by Munro Ferguson, as well as excerpts from Facing Champlain, a stereoscopic production created for the 400th anniversary celebrations in Quebec City, directed by Jean-François Pouliot and produced in collaboration with the Musée de la civilisation du Québec.

"Normally, organizations don't share their experimental processes," said Tom Perlmutter. "But we want to start changing that - letting Canadians into the creative workshop. It's a little retro at the moment with the funky glasses, but it's a playroom, it's the skunk work of testing things out while we figure out how to make this fully part of the NFB online experience."

These films will be available in 3D on the Screening Room as well as iPhones. Users will be able to order 3D glasses online, <NFB.ca/3D>, with free shipping in Canada.

A growing online collection

These new HD and 3D titles join over 1,400 NFB productions online at <NFB.ca>, in English and French, with new titles added weekly.

Available free of charge, 24/7, these titles include acclaimed auteur animation, point-of-view documentaries, new works by independent filmmakers, alternative dramas, cinéma vérité classics, and more.

About the NFB

Canada's public film producer and distributor, the National Film Board of Canada creates social-issue documentaries, auteur animation, alternative drama and digital content that provide the world with a unique Canadian perspective. In collaboration with its international partners and co-producers, the NFB is expanding the vocabulary of 21st-century cinema and breaking new ground in form and content, through community filmmaking projects, cross-platform media, interactive cinema, stereoscopic animation - and more. Since the NFB's founding in 1939, it has created over 13,000 productions and won over 5,000 awards, including 12 Oscars and more than 90 Genies. In 2009, Neighbours/Voisins by NFB animation founder Norman McLaren was added to UNESCO's Memory of the World Register. The NFB's new website features over 1,400 productions online, and its iPhone app has become one of the most popular and talked about downloads. Visit <NFB.ca> today and start watching!

SOHO VFX AND THE FOUNDRY FINALIZE NUKE ROLL-OUT

London, 20 January 2010. The Foundry, leading developer of visual effects software whose products have been used to make globally acclaimed movies such as Avatar, is pleased to announce that Soho VFX, a world-class visual effects facility with studios in Toronto and Los Angeles, has invested heavily in Nuke.

Bill Collis, CEO, The Foundry, said,

"We are delighted to welcome Soho VFX into the Nuke family. We spent a lot of time working closely with Soho VFX to ensure that Nuke was going to fit nicely into their current pipeline. It is a big decision to change a business' complete pipeline over to a new product, no matter what it is. There are many areas the tools and companies need to ensure line up and we were very pleased to have been involved from the outset."

Allan Magled, CEO, Soho VFX, said,

"Soho VFX, like many facilities today, has spent years building a scalable workflow to satisfy the growing demands of the visual effects industry. This is not a simple task.

Ideally we need to ensure that the compositing tools that we use are fast, reliable, extremely customizable and that they enable us to push the boundaries of creativity. Most importantly they need to run on a variety of hardware platforms and work seamlessly with a multitude of other applications that are used across our facilities daily.

Our Nuke evaluation was quite lengthy.  We looked very closely at render and desktop performance over several iterations of the product. Integration into our current environment from both a developers and 2D Artist's standpoint was very important to us and, as such, we spent a lot of time looking at scripting and internal development tools in Nuke as well as ease of use in transitioning from our previous compositing application.  Lastly we took a strong look at the development history and future road map of Nuke to ensure its direction matched our own.

In doing so we have found Nuke to be a polished compositing suite with a long and bright future."

Prime Focus Completes 90 VFX Shots for 'How Earth Made Us'

19 January 2009 - Prime Focus has completed over 90 VFX shots for the BBC's
new 5 x 60m HD series "How Earth Made Us." The program explores how
geology, geography and climate have influenced and continue to shape human
history. Each episode examines a different force, including the effects of
deep earth, wind, fire and water. The series concludes with a look at how
the human race has become a geological force in its own right. The first
episode airs in the UK on BBC Two on Tuesday 19 January at 9pm.

Travelling to some of the most iconic locations on the planet, Professor
Iain Stewart discovers how the river Nile caused Egypt to dominate the
ancient world, how the break up of a super-continent 200 million years ago
shaped an energy revolution, and how wind patterns changed the history of
China and Australia.

"Graphics were a vital part of the series ambition, helping to explain the
nitty gritty of how the Earth has influenced human history," said Jonathan
Renouf, series producer for the BBC. "Prime Focus was great to work with.
The team grasped difficult concepts and came up with some stunning ways to
visualize them, whether it was the relationship between the planet's wind
systems and the growth of trade, or the way in which fault lines stimulated
the growth of early civilizations."

The Prime Focus team, led by Broadcast VFX creative director Simon Clarke
and VFX producer Melody Woodford, worked for eight months on the project,
supplying around 50 minutes of high-end VFX shots. "We were tasked to
create a large number of shots with a fairly tight budget and high
expectations of quality," said Simon.  "As well as creating credible visual
effects, many shots required a level of conceptual visualization to
demonstrate specific scientific phenomena. For example we were tasked with
depicting the formation of distinct sand dunes created by consistent wind
cycles that sculpt the shape of the land."

The initial phases of work involved blocking out camera moves to get some
sense of timing and to provide the edit with animatics. In parallel to
this, digital matte painters worked on creating high levels of texture
detail to apply to 3d models and backgrounds.  In addition the team was
tasked with streamlining the 'Earth' pipeline - optimizing render set ups
to deal with the vast amount of picture information and detail that were
required for the surface textures.

"For many shots the camera travelled more obliquely across the surface, so
a more three dimensional approach was called for in creating terrain and
volumetric clouds. This added another level of detail and scale enabling us
to start in fairly close on the earth and pull out wide. The clouds would
then scale accordingly," said Simon. "One particular shot caught the eye -
a huge pull out from an aerial live action shot of the presenter standing
on Mt. Connor in Australia to a 'space shuttle' type view of the earth,
giving the illusion that it was one seamless camera move."

Melody Woodford, the VFX producer, was able to call on the Prime Focus Film
VFX team in North America, who was busy working on James Cameron's Avatar
at the time, for a specific shot which showed the progression of giant
crystals forming in a Mexican cave. "We knew that our Film VFX colleagues
had used a piece of software for simulating the kryptonite sequences in
Superman Returns which was very similar to the look we were trying to
achieve," said Melody. "We did some modifications to the software and the
R&D that was behind it and then they took that sequence on board to deliver
the finished shot. It was a great example of our 'Worldsourcing' business
model."

Whether you are running a business or cycling, you have to constantly be going in a forward direction, and you need to build momentum. If you don't, you will inevitably fall behind. So, I wanted a company name that related to cycling -- one that conjured up the image of never stopping, never letting up, and always moving forward -- thus 'Pedal Faster.'"

ABOUT JEFF ROSS:

Prior to the launch of Pedal Faster, Jeff Ross had been Executive Vice President with Hollywood-based Eden FX, since 2003. There, he was responsible for business development, marketing and publicity, and the administrative and financial management of that leading visual effects company.

During his tenure with Eden FX, the company was involved in providing 3D and 2D visual effects to a broad range of hit television series and motion pictures. These included the television shows Lost, Ghost Whisperer, Fringe, Flash Forward, Chuck, 24 and The Office, and the feature films Get Smart, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Spider-Man 3, Superman Returns, and Nim's Island.
Before Eden FX, Ross worked for eleven years with Pacific Ocean Post (POP). There, he served for seven years as Executive Vice President/Chief Operating Officer, managing all facets of the company as it grew into one of the premiere post-production facilities in the commercial, television, and feature film markets. Later, he spent four years as Managing Director of POP Film, guiding its visual effects work on numerous high profile feature films. These included Independence Day, Titanic, Star Trek: First Contact, Volcano, Devil's Advocate, Dr. Dolittle, What Dreams May Come, and X-Men.

LOS ANGELES (Jan. 13, 2009) -- The American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (AFTRA) -- a national union of more than 70,000 professional performers, recording artists and broadcast journalists working in the entertainment and news media -- is pleased to announce the AFTRA Foundation will honor the past and current cast members of the iconic children's television program, "Sesame Street," with the AFTRA Foundation's 2010 AFTRA Media and Entertainment Excellence Award (The AMEES) at a dinner gala on Feb. 22 at New York's Plaza Hotel.

Created in 2003, the AMEE Awards honor AFTRA members for excellence in their craft and their contributions to the fields of media and entertainment. Proceeds from the 2010 AMEE Awards go to benefit the AFTRA Foundation, an independent non-profit organization separate from the union that provides support to charitable and educational endeavors critical to AFTRA members, including the George Heller Memorial Scholarship which provides scholarships to AFTRA members and their dependents for academic study and the International News Safety Institute, the only global organization solely dedicated to the safety of journalists and other news professionals.

"'Sesame Street' is a cultural landmark. Over the span of four decades, the cast members of this outstanding program have taught generations of children their ABCs and 123s through a diverse rainbow of characters, human and puppet alike," said AFTRA Foundation President Shelby Scott. "For 40 years, the consistent message of 'Sesame Street' to its viewers is one shared by the AFTRA Foundation: the importance of education and a meaningful and abiding appreciation for the wonderful diversity of the world in which we live."

Celebrating its 40th year and airing in more than 140 nations, "Sesame Street" has become one of the single greatest informal educators of young children in the world with its cast of Muppets, actors and guest stars.

When "Sesame Street" premiered on Nov. 10, 1969, it took on a strong visual style, fast-moving action and comedic format similar to another AFTRA-covered program, "Laugh-In," but with a target audience of inner city preschool-aged children with little access to quality education.

Over the years, the curriculum-driven program has changed formats and cast members and made history. Its cast - from Jim Henson's Muppets to the dozens of human characters it has employed over the decades, including original cast members Bob McGrath and Loretta Long - has reflected the diversity of the country.

Sesame Workshop, the non-profit educational organization, has expanded "Sesame Street's" reach, delivering it through television, radio, books, magazines, interactive media and community outreach on a local, national and global level. Through each media platform, the goal of the program remains the same: to help children reach their highest potential.

Also receiving honors will be broadcast journalist Robin Roberts with the AMEE Award in Broadcasting and Spanish-language recording artist Juanes, with the AMEE Award in Sound Recordings.

Veteran broadcaster Charles Osgood and music legend Sam Moore will receive AMEE Lifetime Achievement Awards in their respective fields.

AFTRA National First Vice President and award-winning broadcast journalist, Bob Edwards, will serve as Master of Ceremonies at the 2010 AMEES. Edwards is the host of "The Bob Edwards Show" on XM Satellite Radio. Before joining XM in 2004, he hosted National Public Radio's (NPR) "Morning Edition" for more than 24 years. Edwards was inducted in the national Radio Hall of Fame in 2004 and is a past AMEE Award recipient.

Past AMEE recipients include the late "60 Minutes" producer Don Hewitt and his team of CBS on-air journalists including the late Ed Bradley, Steve Kroft, Dan Rather, Andy Rooney, Morley Safer, Bob Simon, Lesley Stahl and Mike Wallace. Other past honorees include Smokey Robinson, Jeanne Cooper, Vin Scully, Don LaFontaine, Cedric The Entertainer, Willard Scott, Roberta Flack, Bob Edwards, Don Hastings, Susan Flannery, Amber Tamblyn, Patti Austin, Robert Hager, Sam Donaldson, Susan Lucci and vocalist Maureen McGovern.

SAN FRANCISCO, Jan. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- The 2010 Game Developers Choice Awards, the highest honors in video game development, is beginning the announcement of its Special Awards for the tenth annual ceremony, taking place at GDC 2010 this March, and has named Valve co-founder Gabe Newell as the winner of this year's Pioneer Award.

The Pioneer Award -- originated by the Game Developers Choice Awards organizers at the 2008 Awards, and the first award to honor breakthrough figures in the game industry -- celebrates those individuals responsible for developing a vital technology or game design at a crucial juncture in video game history, paving the way for the many who followed them.

This year, the Choice Awards Advisory Committee, which includes notables such as Ben Cousins (EA DICE), Harvey Smith (Arkane), Raph Koster (Metaplace), John Vechey (PopCap), Ray Muzyka (BioWare), Clint Hocking (Ubisoft), and others has voted to give the Pioneer Award to Valve's Newell. He is being awarded for his work in co-creating the PC key digital download service Steam, and helping to make possible some of the most important video games of the past two decades -- from the Half-Life series through Portal to Team Fortress and beyond.

Newell, who co-founded Valve in 1996 after his departure from giant tech firm Microsoft, was instrumental in creating the company's first product, the critically acclaimed first-person shooter Half-Life, which brought sophisticated narrative and cut-scenes to the FPS for the first time, and has sold over 8 million copies. The company's keen, unprecedented encouragement of modding and community based around the Half-Life engine also led to the creation of the Counter-Strike and Team Fortress 2 franchises.

Recent years have only buoyed Valve's reputation, including 2004's debut of the much-acclaimed Half-Life 2 episodes, the signing of the DigiPen team behind Narbacular Drop to create 2008 Game Developers Choice Awards Game of the Year Portal, and the Seattle-area firm's work to support and co-originate the co-operative centric Left 4 Dead franchise.

Steam, Valve's PC digital distribution platform, is another particular reason Newell is receiving this honor. Revealed at GDC in 2002 and made available to the public in 2003, the client has evolved from a method of seamlessly delivering game patches to a full community-based digital download ecosystem which regularly has more than 2 million concurrent users. Thus, it has become a key way for many smaller and larger PC game developers to gain fans and make money without requiring a physical retail publisher.

Valve's Newell will be on stage to collect his Special Award at GDC 2010 in San Francisco this March. Over 3,000 of the industry's top developers will be present at the Choice Awards ceremony to honor him and the other, to-be-revealed Special Award winners -- alongside the top games of 2009 in multiple categories.

The Game Developers Choice Awards -- open to any game, and with Main Competition winners being selected by the International Choice Awards Network, a new invitation-only group comprised of 500 leading game creators from all parts of the video game industry -- prides itself on being the most open, transparent, and respected video game awards anywhere. Further Special Award winners and Main Competition finalists will be announced in the near future.

Presented by Think Services' Game Developers Conference (GDC), this year's awards ceremony, held in conjunction with the Independent Games Festival Awards, will be hosted on Thursday, March 11th, during GDC 2010 at San Francisco's Moscone Center. For complete details, please visit http://www.gamechoiceawards.com.

New Digital Filmmaking Laboratory Program Engages Industry Leaders and Ringling College Students in Collaborative Environment to Facilitate Film and Television Development

Sarasota, FL - January 14, 2010 - Acclaimed filmmaker Werner Herzog today helped inaugurate the Ringling College of Art and Design's new Digital Filmmaking Studio Lab with student classes and screenings at the college, culminating with a private screening of his film 'Little Dieter Needs to Fly' and Q & A at the Ringling College Academic Center Thursday evening.

The Digital Filmmaking Studio Lab is bringing some of the world's most renowned filmmakers to Ringing College to work collaboratively with Ringling students on learning the process of motion picture and television development through working on actual projects.  As the initial step in the production pipeline for any film or TV program, development is one of the most esoteric and difficult to teach. To this end Ringling College has aligned with A-List Directors, Producers, Screenwriters and Talent to provide real-world experience in the art and science of Filmmaking through acquiring, developing, producing and distributing top-tier content.

The Ringling College Digital Filmmaking Studio Lab is a collaboration of media development company Future Films LLC and the College. Future Films LLC founders Sam Logan in Sarasota and David Shapiro in New York are working with Ringling College's Digital Filmmaking Department Head Bradley Battersby to facilitate the involvement of top-tier people in the film and entertainment industry and identify, fund and acquire projects that the College may develop as the real world educational experience part of the program.

Mr. Herzog conducted filmmaking classes for Ringling College students that included a screening and discussion with students of his just released film 'My Son, My Son, What Have Ye Done?'

The College is currently raising money to finance film projects through the Filmmaking Studio Development Lab Fund, proceeds of which will be used to fund a soundstage for the campus and for the creation of original scripts as well as purchasing the rights to promising screenplays, books and other creative writings which have the potential to become the basis for a film or TV production. The Filmmaking Lab and Future Films are currently in discussions with other industry leaders to develop upcoming projects.

The concept of a Filmmaking Development Studio Laboratory Fund is a new, exciting, and innovative way to work with the rapidly changing motion picture industry. According to Ringling President Larry Thompson, who announced the project, "The Laboratory will benefit the College, the community and the industry. Not only will we be bringing top film professionals to Sarasota to hold public screenings of their work, but the Filmmaking Studio Lab will be working directly with filmmakers on new models of story development, financing, distribution, digital production and post production. The potential benefits of these ongoing creative relationships for our Ringling college students and the greater Sarasota area are vast."

"Teaching the motion picture development process at Ringling College is a 'win-win-win' situation," said Ringling College Digital Filmmaking Department Head Bradley Battersby. "First, it exposes filmmaking students to top writers, directors, and producers; second, it provides real-world experiences for the College students so that they can learn the intricacies and issues involving filmmaking from the beginning stages; and third, it provides an opportunity for writers, directors, and producers to work with filmmaking students and create new material for productions."

To inaugurate the program this January, Ringling College hosted acclaimed German Director Werner Herzog, who's recent filmography includes 'Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans,' starring Nicholas Cage (2009), 'Rescue Dawn,' starring Christian Bale (2006), and the critically acclaimed documentary 'Grizzly Man' (2005.)

After a week of intimate student lectures and screenings of Werner's work, Mr. Herzog screened and discussed 'Little Dieter Needs to Fly' (1997) Thursday evening. The film is a documentary about Dieter Dengler, who was shot down over Laos in 1966, captured, and escaped. Barefoot, surviving monsoons, leeches, and machete-wielding villagers, he was rescued. A quiet man of sorrows tells his story: war, capture, harrowing conditions, escape, and miraculous rescue. Where did he find the strength; how did he live with his memories after his rescue? Little Dieter opened to U.S. audiences in 1998 at the Portland International Film Festival. According to film critic Roger Ebert, Dieter can be summed up in one word - "Unforgettable." Dieter's story provided the foundation for the feature film 'Rescue Dawn,' starring Christian Bale.

Bergen, Norway, January 12, 2010 Vizrt Ltd. (Oslo Main List: VIZ)

Plazamedia is not an average production house. With a long list of first-class outdoor, studio, and sports productions created for customers around the world, the Munich-based company is also well known for using its Open Houses as sneak previews for the most exciting developments in the industry.

"We knew that Plazamedia planned to demonstrate  its new real-time HD virtual studio. So we thought, why not take it one step further and create all the scenes in 3D?," explained Gerhard Lang, Chief Engineering Officer, Vizrt.

The result of the cooperation allowed Plazamedia to promote not only the company's new HD virtual studio and HD master control room, but also Germany's first 3D HD virtual studio, powered by Vizrt technology. The Open House early last month was the public premiere for the new setup.

Instead of seing the usual flat TV picture, Vizrt's real-time renderers created stereoscopic images that were used to create an illusion of depth. Using special 3D glasses, the guests could see moving 3D content on a typical TV screen. The installation was done without the special stereo cameras normally needed for 3D demonstrations. Vizrt's stereoscopic rendering ensured that the on-camera talent remained properly situated within the 3D scene.

Plazamedia's HD virtual studio is based on two Vizrt products: Viz Virtual Studio and the Viz Engine real-time renderering engine. Both system are capable of creating real-time graphics both in SD as well as HD. In addition, Plazamedia worked closely with other leading virtual studio vendors--including Thoma, Technocrane, and Infitec.

"We pride ourselves on having possibly the most innovative virtual studio capability, which is why we added our new HD virtual studio," said Florian Nowosad, CEO of PLAZAMEDIA GmbH.  "But our Open House was an opportunity to show our customers that 3D HD virtual studio capability has arrived, and it's now the cutting edge of realtime TV graphics effects.  We're the first in Germany with a HD virtual studio, and we've set the bar even higher by showing stereo 3D HD virtual studio production--both of which are exciting new ways of keeping TV viewers engaged."

Vizrt's Gerhard Lang added, "This is definitely not a one-off. Some of Vizrt's customers such as ESPN, NFL and BSkyB have already been on air with Stereo 3D content, and we see this as a future growth market for Vizrt.  Broadcasters just require proof that this technology is ready for prime time. With Plazamadia's HD 3D virtual studio, we've demonstrated that 3D production is indeed a valid option."

Paris, 12 January 2010 - Moonscoop, the worldwide brand management and entertainment company representing properties from some of the leading animation producers across the globe, is boosting the profile of its shows in French-speaking Canada with over 150 half hours of sales. Deals include sales of Casper's Scare School to VRAK and Chloe's Closet to TFO, while TVA has acquired both seasons of Dive Olly Dive, and Ava Riko Teo, and TeleQuebec has picked up season two of SamSam.

Lionel Marty, President, Worldwide Sales at Moonscoop said: "We're pleased to celebrate the New Year with a number of sales signed across key titles. French-speaking Canada continues to be a key market and one where our shows consistently perform well."

CGI-animated Casper's Scare School (26x30') continues the adventures of everyone's friendly ghost Casper, who would rather make friends than frighten. Founded over 10,000 years ago to educate and prepare the creature youth of today for the difficult challenges they'll face tomorrow, Scare School's purpose is to turn its pupils into lean, mean, scaring machines! All the students but one that is... Casper doesn't want to disappoint his teachers, but scaring just isn't his thing. No matter how hard he works at being scary, Casper can't help but be friendly.

Chloe's Closet (52 x 11') follows the fun-filled adventures of an adorable, imaginative little girl named Chloe who discovers magical new worlds while playing dress-up in her closet.  Chloe's exploits also encourage the audience to celebrate how delightful it is to be a little kid embarking upon a fabulously fun and fearless, anything-can-happen journey.  Chloe's Closet is produced in high-definition 2D animation out of Moonscoop's LA office, in association with Wales Creative IP Fund, KI.KA/ARD, Trickompany FilmProduktion GMBH, European Film Partners, and Telegael.

Dive Olly Dive! is a 3D action adventure where every experience is an occasion to  learn. Each episode follows the fun-filled underwater escapades of Olly and Beth, two young, unmanned research-submarines-in-training. Under the guidance of their human supervisor Deep Sea Diver Doug, at the research facility, they discover the marvels of the world they live in. Often distracted from their assignments by the abundance of adventure under the sea, there is a quest behind every wave and a lesson to be learned from every experience.

Animated paper cutout show Ava Riko Teo (65x7') is co-produced by Moonscoop with Character Plan, France 5 and EBS.
Based on the works of French author and artist Mila Boutan, Ava Riko Teo is created using a colourful onscreen assembling of all kinds of paper cutouts, which become the setting for young viewers to follow the fun, childlike adventures of three loveable friends: Teo, a soft and cuddly bear, Ava, a charming giraffe, and Riko, a rather hyper-active rabbit. A dedicated website at www.avarikoteo.com continues the experience for viewers with a full range of art and craft activities for children. The online component has been co-produced by Moonscoop with EBS and France 5.
Preschool 3D-animated HD SamSam (52x6'30") is winner of the prestigious 2009 TVFI Export Prize.  Produced by Bayard Jeunesse Animation with ARANEO, Tiji, Gulli and France 5, and distributed worldwide by Moonscoop, the show follows the adventures of the smallest of heroes!
For a hero, he doesn't quite yet have super powers. But it doesn't mean he can't fly his own SamSaucer into space or can't deal with dirty-rotten monsters! Sometimes he does need a little help from his cuddly SamTeddy, SamMummy or SamDaddy, as well as his friends. And granted, sometimes, using his noggin and a bit of imagination gets the work done, too. The series is based on the successful comic-book series of the same name and is a popular show across Europe especially in Italy, Spain, the UK and France.

New Series from Blue's Clues Alumni Offers Interactive Math-Based Curriculum,

Debuts with Two Weeks of Brand-New Episodes

NEW YORK, Jan. 11, 2010 - Nickelodeon will encourage preschoolers to become strong and mighty in math with the launch of Team Umizoomi, the first preschool series to focus entirely on math, on Monday, Jan. 25, with two back-to-back episodes beginning at 11:30 a.m. (ET/PT).  The 20-episode, half-hour series combines action-adventure missions with an interactive math curriculum designed to help kids develop self-confidence in their math abilities and appreciate the many ways in which mathematics shapes their world.

Created by Blue's Clues alumni Soo Kim (Creator/Producer/Design Director/Writer), Michael T. Smith (Creator/Producer/Writer) and Jennifer Twomey (Co-Creator/Executive Producer/Writer), Team Umizoomi features a tiny team of superheroes who use their mighty math powers to help little kids solve big problems.  Set to a soundtrack of preschool-friendly pop songs, the series is designed to build upon preschoolers' conceptual understanding of math as they are exposed to core mathematical concepts like numbers, counting, computations, measurement, patterns and shapes.

"Math surrounds us everywhere we go, which is why we wanted to create a fun, adventure-filled, interactive series that engages preschoolers and encourages them to practice and refine their mathematical thinking skills," said Brown Johnson, President, Animation, Nickelodeon/MTVN Kids and Family Group.  "Team Umizoomi is an action-packed series with interactive math games and catchy pop songs that provide kids with takeaway tools to help them learn and use math in their daily lives."

Following the Jan. 25 premiere, Nickelodeon will air two weeks of brand-new episodes from Tuesday, Jan. 26 - Thursday, Jan. 28; and Monday Feb. 1 - Thursday Feb. 4 at 11:30 a.m. (ET/PT).  Two back-to-back episodes will also encore on Nick Jr., Nickelodeon's 24-hour commercial-free, educational preschool network, on Sunday, Jan. 31, and Sunday, Feb. 7, at 7:00 p.m. (ET).

Team Umizoomi features the voice of Donovan Patton (Joe from Blue's Clues), and mixes 2D and 3D animation with live action to create Umi City, a uniquely patterned urban environment.  The team of miniature, animated, math-powered superheroes - siblings Milli (Sophia Fox) and Geo (Ethan Kempner) and their robot best friend Bot (Patton) - help live-action preschoolers solve everyday problems.  Their team is not complete without their Umifriend (home viewer), who helps the team along the way while practicing various math skills.

To complement Team Umizoomi's math-based curriculum, Nickelodeon's award-winning preschool website, www.nickjr.com, will include an expansive learning section for parents featuring an overview of the series' math curriculum, suggested activities parents can use at home to help preschoolers master math concepts and recommendations for the best math books for preschoolers.  The site will also feature games, videos, printables, crafts and more.  Later this month, additional free, enhanced content will also be available including personalized, customizable printables and a monthly newsletter containing parent tips from preschool education curriculum experts.

In support of the launch, Nickelodeon will offer a two-minute sneak peek of Team Umizoomi on Nick Jr. Video, the broadband video service available on Nickjr.com, and on wireless carriers via video on demand.  The premiere episode will also be simulcast on Nick mobile.

In the premiere episode "Kite Festival," Jeannie is planning to fly her beautiful dragon kite in the Umi City Kite Festival, but a strong gust of wind blows the kite out of her hands and scatters its colorful shaped pieces far and wide throughout Umi City.  It's up to Team Umizoomi to rappel down city billboards, build a hot air balloon and search the tops of skyscrapers to find all the missing pieces and put the kite back together for Jeannie.

Nickelodeon, now in its 30th year, is the number-one entertainment brand for kids. It has built a diverse, global business by putting kids first in everything it does. The company includes television programming and production in the United States and around the world, plus consumer products, online, recreation, books, magazines and feature films. Housed in a rugged, 1RU metal cabinet and compatible with a wide range of HD formats, the IF-2D3D1 is designed to help 3D content producers improve their workflow, whether they are converting archived 2D material or shooting original content in 3D.

"With the public's renewed interest in 3D for both theatrically released content and beyond, many content producers are looking to repurpose existing 2D materials to meet demand. Meanwhile, other producers creating new content need an uncomplicated way to check their 3D footage on location," explained Dave Walton, assistant vice president of marketing and communication. "This single unit is ideal for both. The IF-2D3D1 is the key to providing new solutions for virtually any 3D content creation scenario."

Using unique JVC algorithms, the IF-2D3D1 converts 2D content to 3D in real time, offering no fewer than four 3D mixed formats (which combine left-eye and right-eye images) for stereo video output on a compatible device: line-by-line, side-by-side-half, above-below, and checkerboard. JVC is making this 2D-to-3D conversion technology widely available under license. The IF-2D3D1 can also output discrete left and right signals via HD-SDI or HDMI for dual projection or editing. Output can be adjusted for parallax (image displacement) and 3D intensity - both with natural, anaglyph, and sequential viewing modes.

Generally, 3D footage is shot using a pair of video cameras, but producers have not had a practical method of real-time monitoring on location. The IF-2D3D1 easily combines the left-eye and right-eye images - nothing else is required except a 3D capable monitor, such as JVC's GD-463D10U, a 46-inch 3D LCD panel. A built-in HD-SDI frame synchronizer provides sync for two cameras that lack external sync, plus anaglyph and sequential viewing modes provide multiple ways to check 3D content.

Content creation workflow can also be improved through a variety of additional features. The Scope feature provides a waveform monitor and vectorscope for comparing both video streams on a display to ensure the settings for both cameras - such as exposure and white balance - are matched. The Split feature combines the two video streams on one screen with a moveable boundary, allowing instant L/R comparison. And when one of the two cameras has to be positioned upside down (to ensure correct spacing), Rotation makes sure both streams can be viewed the right way up and in sync.

The IF-2D3D1 will be available March 2009.
