Yellow Submarine Designer Edelmann Dies

Designer Heinz Edelmann, who gave the Beatles’ animated film Yellow Submarine its distinctive look, died July 21 at the age 75.

Edelmann, who was art director on the Fab Four’s 1969 cartoon classic, died in a Stuttgart hospital, according to the State Academy of Art Design where he was a teacher, according to the Associated Press.

A native of Aussing in the former Czechoslovakia, Edelmann began working as a freelance graphic designer in the late 1950s and designed many book covers, including the first German edition of The Lord of the Rings.

He also designed the mascot of the 1992 World’s Fair, held in Seville, Spain.
