Animation Magazine extends our best wishes to animation legend Ollie Johnston on his 91 birthday. One of Disney’s elite "9 Old Men," Johnston and long-time collaborator Frank Thomas were creative driving forces behind such enduring Disney classics as Bambi, Pinocchio, Lady and the Tramp and The Jungle Book.
Johnson was born on Oct. 31, 1912 in Palo Alto Calif. He met Thomas when they were both students at Stanford. They later joined Disney within a year of each other in the mid-1930s.
On April 9 of this year, The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences presented a salute dubbed “Frank and Ollie: Drawn Together,” and renowned animated filmmaker John Canemaker wrote a coinciding special tribute for the May, 2003 issue of Animation Magazine. For more information on the achievements of Johnston and Thomas, visit their web site at www.FrankAnOllie.com. You can also pick up the Frank and Ollie Special Edition DVD released earlier this month by Walt Disney Home Ent. It retails for the suggested price of $29.99.
