Sidney Clifton has been appointed sr. vp and head of development and programming at Film Roman, Inc. Clifton has already placed five projects into fast track development at the independent animation company best known for the primetime hits The Simpsons and King of the Hill. She is also overseeing script development on the animated series Tripping the Rift, which is in production with CinéGroupe and the Sci-Fi Channel.
Clifton’s growing development slate includes three half-hour series. Shlub, created by well-known animator Guy Vasilovich, centers on a boy raised in a jar and his unique view of the world. Shawks, an action-comedy show that began as web series, is about a group of kids convinced the world is being taken over by sharks masquerading as humans. Based on the comic book of the same name, Deity takes place in futuristic Los Angeles and chronicles the adventures of a teenaged girl chosen to save the world.
Other projects include an animated Christmas special about the black magi’s journey to the manger and It’s Davy Jones!, a live-action series starring the former teen idol of The Monkeys fame.
In her new role, Clifton will manage all aspects of the company’s creative development and network and cable sales, as well as the acquisition of literary projects for animation and live-action production. She will also be making deals with actors, writers, directors and producers to create series and television features for the company.
For the past two years, Clifton has been Film Roman’s vp of television development, working closing with former President Peter Schankowitz, who left the company in October to head up development efforts at Vin Di Bona Prods.
Clifton joined Film Roman in 1998 and rose to the rank of vp of development in 2000. She has 20 years of experience in book retail management, journalism, children’s books and publishing.
