The Associated Press reports that Jackson Beck, who provided the voice of Bluto in more than 300 Popeye cartoons, passed away Wednesday morning from complications related to old age. He was 92.
In addition to vying for the affections of Olive Oyle, Beck introduced the 1940s Superman radio programs with the immortal words, “It’s a bird! It’s a plane! It’s Superman!” He was also the voice of the Cisco Kid and did television commercials for such products as Sugar Frosted Flakes, Pepsi, Brawny paper towels and Hasbro-Bradley’s GI Joe action figures.
Son of silent film actor Max Beck, Jackson Beck was a founding member of the American Federation of Radio Artists, which is now part of the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists. He is survived by son Leslie Winter.
