Following a long bout with cancer, author and former president of the Society for Animation Studies Bill Moritz died early in the morning of Friday, March 12, at his sister’s home in Northern California.
Moritz is best known for writing about the works of Oskar Fischinger and other experimental German animators. His book, Optical Poetry: The Life and Work of Oskar Fischinger, was recently published by Indiana University Press and comes out on paperback in April.
In addition to writing and making the festival circuit, Moritz taught at California Institute of the Arts and produced more than 30 experimental films of his own. Memorial services will take place in Los Angeles. Moritz was 63.
