And Then There Were Three
The three films that made the cut in the final Oscar visual effects race are New Line’s The Golden Compass (Michael Fink, Bill Westenhofer, Ben Morris, Trevor Wood) Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End (John Knoll, Hal Hickel, Charles Gibson, John Frazier) and DreamWorks/Paramount’s Transformers (Scott Farrar, Scott Benza, Russell Earl, John Frazier).

Originally seven films were in contention for the awards. Fifteen-minute excerpts from each of the shortlisted films were shown to the Academy’s vfx unit on January 16. Following the screenings, the members selected the final three movies nominated in this category. The four pics that didn’t make the final cut were Warner Bros.’ I Am Legend and 300, Universal’s The Bourne Ultimatum and Evan Almighty.

The Academy Awards for outstanding film achievements of 2007 will be presented on Sunday, Feb. 24 at the Kodak Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center. The ABC Television Network will carry the live telecast beginning at 5 p.m. (PT).
