Warner Bros. Consumer Products has licensed Loony Tunes’ Tweety, DC Comics’ Batman and Superman and Cartoon Network’s The Powerpuff Girls, among others, to Mastercard (Maestro) South Africa for branded debit cards targeted to the youth market.
The card system, branded (sum)1 (pronounced “someone”), is the first banking product to carry the Maestro logo and is designed to educate and drive young consumers to begin using debit card facilities.
According to Mastercard SouthAfrica Sr. VP Eddie Grobler, debit cards have taken off in the region over the past two years with people over the age of 25. The company is hoping the animation tie-ins will help the concept catch on with the younger set. Other characters featured include Warner Bros.’ Taz and Cartoon Network favorites from Ed, Edd n Eddie and Cow and Chicken.
