TOKYOPOP Polishes More Dark Crystal Mangas

If you were one of those die-hard Dark Crystal fans who couldn’t wait to get their hands on the 25th anniversary DVD a couple of weeks ago, you’d be happy to hear about more tie-in plans for the Jim Henson classic property. TOKYOPOP announced this week that it will publish an all-new manga prequel titled Legends of the Dark Crystal: The Garthim Wars. The graphic novel is written by Barbara Randall Kesel, with illustrations by Heidi Arnhold & Max Kim and a special cover painted by Jae-Hwan Kim (Warcraft, War Angels).

The feature film was conceived and directed by Jim Henson, telling the story of Jen and Kira, the last of their kind living in a fractured world precariously balanced between the forces of good and evil. TOKYOPOP’s manga prequel takes place hundreds of years before the events of the film, when the gentle Gelflings and wise Mystics are still thriving, as well as the evil Skeksis.

Lisa Henson, co-CEO of The Jim Henson Co says, “The Dark Crystal is a fan favorite and is constantly discovered by new audiences who enjoy the rich detail of the fantastical characters and their world. TOKYOPOP has been a wonderful partner in this project and we are excited for fans to explore the saga’s newest chapter.”

As Rob Tokar, TOKYOPOP Editor-in-Chief points out , “The Dark Crystal has a large, passionate group of fans, and I personally know many people who count themselves among them. It’s a responsibility that all of us involved have taken very seriously, and I hope it’s evident in the amazing creative team we’ve brought together for this book.”

In addition, director Genndy Tartakovsky (Samurai Jack, Clone Wars) and his team at The Orphanage are working on the upcoming feature The Power of the Dark Crystal with the Henson Company. The project will be ready in 2009.
