Strawberry Shortcake Targets Tongue Fans
You know it was bound to happen sooner or later. JAKKS Pacific announced that it has signed a licensing deal with DIC Entertainment and American Greetings to produce Tongue Tape, candy tongue strips based on American Greetings property Strawberry Shortcake.
Set to debut at the National Confections Associations Candy Expo in Chicago this week, JAKKS Pacific’s Flying Colors division will produce a selection of candy-flavored tongue strips representing Strawberry Shortcake and her pals, including Apple Dumplin’, Huckleberry, Ginger Snap, Orange Blossom, Angel Cake and –we kid you not– her pets Honey Pie, Custard and Pupcake. The company plans to ship this new Tongue Tape line to toys, mass merchant and retail stores nationwide in the fall. JAKKS is also launching a line of activity toys based on Strawberry Shortcake to be sold at Target Stores in August.
Strawberry Shortcake, which was a popular staple of children’s television back in the 1980s, is experiencing a comeback lately. Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment released two Strawberry Shortcake movies (Meet Strawberry Shortcake and Spring for Strawberry Shortcake) on VHS and DVD earlier this year. The property has big merchandising plans in place for 2003, from dolls and books to PC games, fashion tops and furniture. In addition, upcoming Strawberry titles Get Well Adventure and Berry Merry Christmas will be released on DVD and VHS in the fall, and a live-action mall tour will kick off the summer season. We have a feeling everyone in the mall audience is going to be snacking on those Very Berry-Scented Strips.
