Ape Entertainment has acquired the rights to publish comic books based on the upcoming DreamWorks Animation feature films Megamind and Kung Fu Panda 2.
Based in San Diego, Ape adds the new licenses to its current DreamWorks licenses for comics based on Shrek and Penguins of Madagascar under its Kizoic imprint.
The company plans to release a 48-page Megamind prequel comic in October, just prior to the film’s Nov. 5 release, followed by a four-issue series beginning in November. Its plans for Kung Fu Panda 2 are similar, with a 48-page prequel due out in April, the film due for release on May 27, and a four-issue series starting in May.
‘As soon as we caught a glimpse of Megamind, we knew we wanted to be involved in the comic book adaptation,’ says founder and co-publisher David Hedgecock. ‘And Kung Fu Panda is a personal favorite of everyone at Ape Entertainment, so being able to work with the sequel has us all feeling like kids in a candy store.’
Ape Entertainment was founded in 2003, and publishes such titles as Go-Go Gorilla and the Jungle Crew, Superhuman Resources, Black Coat, Athena Voltaire and The Trouble With Katie Rogers.
