Roy Disney Rallies Support Online
Following his Nov. 30 resignation from the Walt Disney Co. board of directors, company vice chairman Roy Disney has established SaveDisney.com, a web site "dedicated to those concerned about the welfare of The Walt Disney Company and its future direction." Fellow resigned officer Stan Gold, Disney’s partner in Shamrock Holdings, is also involved with the site.
The site’s homepage contains a message from Roy Disney, saying, "Stan Gold and I plan to use this site as a central information location as we begin to restore Disney to its position as the preeminent entertainment company in the world," Disney writes in a message on the site’s homepage. Also included are Disney’s and Gold’s resignation letters to company CEO Michael Eisner, whom they have both publicly admonished for his management decisions during the past seven years.
In addition, Roy, the nephew of late company founder and visionary Walt Disney, has posted the letter he addressed to all Disney "cast members" on Dec. 3. He writes in the letter, "Michael Eisner has lost sight of the vision on which this Company was founded. The focus has shifted to the chase for the quick buck instead of a dedication to new and high quality ideas, the development of enduring value." He also alleges that Eisner isolated him from the animation department and calls on the board of directors to "finally recognize that fundamental change is needed to restore the Disney luster, nurture and protect the wonderful characters that together we have developed and, most importantly, to create the environment within the workplace necessary to give life to new Disney icons for the generations to come."
Since the fallout, a number of petitions have been making the online and e-mail rounds, asking fans and industry professionals to express their support for Roy Disney and his cause and demand the removal of Eisner from his post at Disney.
