Yahoo Movies (www.movies.yahoo.com) has a slideshow of concept art for the upcoming sequel to Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest. This follow-up to Disney’s 2003 swashbuckling hit promises more stunning visual effects by ILM as Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp), Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) and Elizabeth Swan (Keira Knightley) return to take on the legend of Davey Jones and some truly fishy-looking buccaneers from the deep.
The drawings give us an idea of what we can expect from the film’s lead antagonist, as played by the great Bill Nighy (Shaun of the Dead, Love Actually). Whereas Geoffrey Rush got zombified for the first movie, Nighy’s Davey Jones appears to feature a combination of human and sea-creature qualities such as a crab’s claw and squid-like tentacles. There are also a couple of great pieces of art depicting the design of the famous Flying Dutchman, a ghastly ghost ship that features prominently in the sequel.
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest is slated for release on July 7, 2006. Disney has high hopes for its success considering its predecessor, Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, earned more than $650 million worldwide. Director Gore Verbinski is concurrently shooting a third installment of the series for a 2007 release.
