Sony Pictures Classics has released the U.S. trailer for Paprika, the latest anime tour-de-force from virtuoso Japanese filmmaker Satoshi Kon (Perfect Blue, Millennium Actress, Tokyo Godfathers). The film, which screened stateside late last year for Oscar consideration, will debut in select North American theaters on May 25.
The movie revolves around Dr. Atsuko Chiba, an attractive, 29-year-old Japanese research psychotherapist working on cutting-edge therapy involving dream manipulation. Her alter-ego is a stunning and fearless 18-year-old ‘dream detective,’ code named Paprika, who can enter into people’s dreams and synchronize with their unconscious to help uncover the source of their anxiety or neurosis. But when the technology that allows her to do this falls into the wrong hands, all hell breaks loose and Atsuko must put her life on the line to set things right. The pic is adapted from a science fiction novel by Yatsutaka Tsutsui and sports the tagline ‘This is your brain on anime.’
Paprika is produced by Sony Pictures Ent. Japan and animation studio Madhouse. To view the new U.S. trailer, go to www.apple.com/trailers/sony/paprika. Additional footage from the movie can be seen at www.paprikamovie.com.
