Warner Archive to release the Censored Eleven

Eleven vintage Warner Bros. shorts known as the “Censored Eleven” that have sat on the shelves for more than 40 years due to their controversial depiction of race will get a DVD release next year via the studio’s on-demand Warner Archive service, according to ToonZone.net

The titles in the Censored Eleven are:

• Hittin’ the Trail for Hallelujah Land (1931, directed by Rudolf Ising)
• Sunday Go to Meetin’ Time (1936, directed by Friz Freleng)
• Clean Pastures (1937, directed by Friz Freleng)
• Uncle Tom’s Bungalow (1937, directed by Tex Avery)
• Jungle Jitters (1938, directed by Friz Freleng)
• The Isle of Pingo Pongo (1938, directed by Tex Avery)
• All This and Rabbit Stew (1941, directed by Tex Avery)
• Coal Black and de Sebben Dwarfs (1943, directed by Robert Clampett)
• Tin Pan Alley Cats (1943, directed by Robert Clampett)
• Angel Puss (1944, directed by Chuck Jones)
• Goldilocks and the Jivin’ Bears (1944, directed by Friz Freleng)

The films are set to be made available, uncensored and uncut, sometime in 2011.

The shorts may raise eye-brows to a modern audience, but seeing some kind of consumer distribution for some of them comes as well-deserved news, particularly Clampett’s much celebrated Coal Black and de Sebben Dwarfs.

I hope that this DVD release applies to an international market- so beyond the US markets- as they do deserve to be viewed for historical purposes.

Why release these Racist shorts now? as an
A.American animator, I’ve seen a few of these
and I didn’t find it funny at all..It reminds
me on how Americans Viewed the Black race and
what the Black race had to endure…The titles
alone from some of my favorite Animators hurt..I guess if I ever met them, They would think of me as 1 of those TITLES that the have… A bad stamp in Animation and a bad
Ideal to release these…They were on a shelf
all those years for a REASON…I’m shocked and Disappointed..
