Fans of a certain spinach-chomping sailor with oversized forearms will be stampeding to stores today as Warner Bros. Home Entertainment releases the long-awaited Popeye the Sailor: 1933-1938 Vol. 1 DVD. Priced at $64.98, this glorious 4-disc collector’s edition features the first 60 of the original Fleischer Studios cartoons, fully restored from the original negatives in black and white.
The acclaimed shorts, The Paneless Window Washer and Lost and Foundry, and the first two three-color-Technicolor two-reel specials, Popeye the Sailor Meets Sinbad the Sailor and Popeye the Sailor Meets Ali Baba’s Forty Thieves, are only a few of this dream collection’s highlights. The nine-hour-long package also includes audio commentaries from Mark Kausler, Jerry Beck, Mark Evanier, and others. Restrospectives on the famous sailor ( which was first introduced in Elzie Crisler Segar’s King Features strip Thimble Theater on January 17, 1929) and Max Fleischer are also included.
