First Star Wars Trio Coming to DVD

February 10, 2004 by Ryan Ball divider image

If you’ve been waiting with bated breath for the original Star Wars trilogy to finally be released on DVD, your wait will soon be over. Lucasfilm Ltd. and Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment announced that the films will be released as a four-disc set on Sept. 21 in the U.S. and Canada, with international release dates following closely.

Three of the discs will contain digitally restored and remastered presentations the first three features in the highly successful fantasy film franchise, and the fourth will be reserved for bonus material. Extras will include what Fox Home Ent. is calling "the most comprehensive feature-length documentary ever produced about the Star Wars saga" and never-before-seen footage from the making of all three films.

While the release boasts a generous offering of extra features, it’s what’s not included that has many fans of the franchise up in arms. The discs will only include the "Special Edition" versions that were released in theaters a few years ago. People who want to watch the original release versions will have hang onto their old VHS tapes as George Lucas has no plans of ever releasing them on DVD without the CG enhancements and restored footage that he feels makes the movies complete.
