Clones Sales Slashes Records, Fastest-Selling Release of the Year, Many Retailers Out of Stock
With first day retail sales topping $75 million, Star Wars: Episode II Attack of the Clones has become the fastest selling home entertainment release of the year. According to the title’s distributor, Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment, many retailers are out of stock due to the high demand.
While the latest installment in the Star Wars saga has broken the first day sales record set by Spider-Man earlier this month, it still has a way to go before it clones the web slinger’s phenomenal $190 million in three days. But one thing Episode II has going for it is the fact that it’s the first major live-action motion picture captured directly from a digital source. What that means is that the DVD is, as the ads say, “a perfect clone.”
As fans eagerly gobble up DVD and VHS copies like Jabba The Hut in a frog pond, the film is still raking in bucks at the box office. It is enjoying a successful run at IMAX venues nationwide.
