Disney’s Academy Award-nominated animated feature Treasure Planet docks at home video retailers today. In addition to an imaginative, futuristic updating of Robert Louis Stevenson’s literary classic, Treasure Island, the DVD offers collectors a treasure trove of extra features.
Treasure Planet employs a blend of 2D and 3D animation to tell the story of young Jim Hawkins, a troubled youth who finds adventure and friendship on a swashbuckling quest for a fabled planet brimming with stashed treasure. Joseph-Gordon Levitt from TV’s Third Rock from the Sun voices Hawkins. The voice cast also includes Emma Thompson, Brian Murray, Martin Short.
DVD etxras include commentary by directors John Musker and Ron Clements, behind-the-scenes specials and deleted scenes, including alternate ending. There’s also an RLS Legacy game featuring a virtual 3D tour of the ship and a treasure hunt. Disney’s Animation Magic takes viewers behind the scenes with Roy Disney, while the “Disney Pedia” reveals the real life of a pirate. still art galleries, character galleries, an animation featurette, a music featurette, a music video and on dimensional staging and merging 2D and 3D worlds.
