Recent animated Strawberry Shortcake titles from DIC Home Entertainment and Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment (TCFHE) have sold more than 2 million DVD and VHS units combined, with all four 2003 releases landing in the top 20 on kid video charts. Additionally, iParenting Media selected Berry Merry Christmas and Get Well Adventures to receive the 2003 Great Holiday Products Awards, which honor the best products in the children’s media and juvenile product marketplace.
Since re-launching in first quarter 2003, Strawberry Shortcake, a collaboration between DIC, TCFHE and American Greetings, has generated impressive sales in the U.S. across all merchandise categories, including home video. The titles Berry Merry Christmas, Get Well Adventures, Meet Strawberry Shortcake and Spring for Strawberry Shortcake have held their own against such popular and heavily promoted properties as Barbie of Swan Lake, Stitch: The Movie, Scooby Doo and SpongeBob SquarePants. The companies are scheduled to complete six more brand new titles for U.S. distribution in 2004/2005.
Strawberry Shortcake was originally launched by American Greetings in 1979 as a series of greeting cards and went on to generate $1.2 billion at retail. The strawberry-scented characters have given birth to 25 million dolls, 10 million toy accessories, 12 million books, 15 million pieces of children’s apparel, 35 million accessories, three gold records, six animated specials and a series of home videos.
