Put down those joysticks. ADV Manga has announced street dates for the label’s first two comic book releases, Full Metal Panic! Mission 01 and Azumanga Daioh Vol. 1. Both titles will be available at bookstores and comic/specialty stores nationwide right after Labor Day 2003.
A tie-in to the hit ADV Films anime release of the same name, the Full Metal Panic! manga attempts to balance high school comedy and hard-hitting action with the story of gung-ho young secret agent Sosuke Sagara, assigned to go undercover and protect high school honor student Kaname Chidori from a band of international terrorists. Needless to say, Sosuke’s background as a counterinsurgent guerilla isn’t the best possible preparation for school days. Full Metal Panic! First appeared serially in Newtype USA magazine.
Created by the iconoclastic Kiyohiko Azuma, Azumanga Daioh is a strongly character-driven tale which chronicles the hilarious daily tribulations of the precocious Chiyo (promoted to high school at age 12) and a group of her classmates. Azumanga Daioh boasts exceptionally strong name recognition, including overwhelming fan enthusiasm about the anime series (forthcoming 2004 from ADV Films).
Specializing in Japanese and other East Asian comics, illustration books, graphic novels and more, ADV Manga is the publishing division of A.D. Vision, Inc., parent company of ADV Films, Newtype USA, Anime Network and more. Founded in 2003, with nationwide mass-market distribution, ADV Manga is vying to be part of the explosively growing U.S. market for imported graphic novels and related published materials.
