Mutant Aliens Set for DVD Release

Mutant Aliens, the latest feature from cult-hero animator Bill Plympton, will be released on DVD through IndieDVD on June 17. The quirky, hand-drawn sci-fi comedy had a limited theatrical release in 2002 and was one of this year’s 17 animated Oscar hopefuls.

Mutant Aliens tells the story of Earl Jensen, a stranded astronaut who returns after 20 years with an army of aliens to get revenge on space-industry tycoon Dr. Frubar.

The film was an entry in the Sundance Film Festival in 2001 and won the Grand Prize at the 2001 Annecy Animation Festival. The DVD will also contain The Plympton Diaries, a multi-part behind-the-scenes look at the entire creation of the film.

Plympton is currently at work on his fifth animated feature, Hair High, which will include the voices of Sarah Silverman, Beverly D’Angelo, Keith Carradine, David Carradine, Ed Begley Jr., Martha Plimpton and Craig Bierko. You can still catch Bill drawing scenes from the film live on his “Ani-Cam” at www.hairhigh.com.
