Grave of the Fireflies Makes Top 100 DVD List

The movie Roger Ebert raves “Belongs on any list of the greatest war films ever made” has landed a spot in the top portion of another list. Central Park announced that the Collector’s Series edition of anime favorite Grave of the Fireflies came in at No. 5 on DVD Verdict’s list of the Top 100 Best DVD Films.

Fireflies, a Studio Ghibli production, is the only anime film to fall within the top half of the list. It even came in ahead of many all-time classics like Citizen Kane. All films were ranked based on their movie score (a straight average of DVD Verdict’s acting and story review scores) and technical score (a weighted average of the video, audio, and extras scores).

Awarded 1st Prize in the “Best Animated Feature” and “Rights of the Child” categories at the Chicago Int’l Children’s Film Festival, Fireflies, tells the story of two orphaned and homeless children who set out to survive on their own in post-World War II Japan.

2-disc Collector’s Series Edition set includes the option of watching the entire film in storyboard. Other extras include an interviews with director Isao Takahata, original author Akiyuki Nosaka and film critic Roger Ebert. Professors Theodore F. Cook and Haruko Taya Cook also provide commentary from a historical perspective and the filmmakers also discuss the video restoration process in a special doccumentary. DVD-ROM features include the script, additional storyboards, an art gallery and cast and crew credits.

Grave of the Fireflies Collector’s Series Edition is suggested for ages 13 and up. It is presented in anamorphic widescreen format with English & Japanese language options and English subtitles. The Central Park Media release lists for $29.99
