Matell’s direct-to-video CG feature Barbie as Rapunzel debuted in late September and came in at number 1 in both the Official U.K. Top 100 Video Chart and the Official U.K. Children’s Chart. It went on to become the U.K.’s biggest non-theatrical new release of 2002, outselling Dreamworks’ Spirit and Disney’s Peter Pan.
Released on the Right Entertainment label and distributed by Universal, Barbie as Rapunzel stars the blonde icon as a brave and determined girl who is locked in a hidden tower with only her wits to help her escape evil and find love and freedom.
A follow-up to Barbie’s CG feature debut in Barbie in the Nutcracker, Barbie as Rapunzel was animated through motion-capture technology and recently picked up the award for Best Animated Character Performance at the 2002 DVD Premiere Awards. It also won for Best Original Score and was nominated in the Best Animated DVD Premiere Movie category.
