March 6, 2003 by Ryan Ball divider image

Nokia announced at the Game Developers Conference the launch of its first dedicated games platform. The Nokia N-Gage game deck is a color enabled handheld device that combines personal gaming and wireless communications capabilities. The system, based on Nokia’s Series 60 mobile terminal software platform, will allow multiplayer gameplay both locally and over global wireless networks.

The company is currently working with several top game developers and publishers including Activision, Eidos, Sega, Taito and THQ. Gamers can expect Nokia N-Gage versions of Tomb Raider, Sonic N, Super Space Invaders and Red Faction. Nokia will also publish its own titles on removable MMC cards.

In addition to the gaming features, the N-Gage includes tri-band GSM connectivity for wireless calls, stereo FM radio and a built-in MP3 player.

More information on developing applications for the Nokia N-Gage game deck and Nokia’s mobile game development and distribution can be found at www.forum.nokia.com/games.
