No new animated features are debuting this Friday, but Disney’s English-language version of Hayao Miyazaki’s Ponyo will enter its second week of release in 927 theaters and should easily surpass the $6 million gross mark.
Family audiences should also get a kick out of the new Robert Rodriguez (Spy Kids, The Adventures of Sharkboy & Lava Girl 3D, Sin City) feature, Shorts, which centers on a young boy who discovers a rainbow-colored rock that grants him all his wishes with hilarious results. The movie showcases some fun vfx work by Hybride Technologies, Gentle Giant Studios and K.N.B. Effects.
Quentin Tarantino’s much-buzzed-about Inglourious Basterds will also open in U.S. theaters after receiving mixed reviews during the Cannes Film Festival last spring. CIS Hollywood delivered the film’s visual effects.
